Lotus Reverses Course: New Plug-in Hybrid Promises Unprecedented Range
British sports car marque Lotus has made a significant pivot in its electrification strategy, unveiling its first-ever plug-in hybrid powertrain. Dubbed the “X Hybrid,” this new system is set to redefine expectations for driving range, boasting an impressive combined figure of up to 1200 kilometres and a substantial 350 kilometres of all-electric capability.
This innovative hybrid technology is slated for its European debut within the upcoming Lotus Eletre X, a large SUV that will follow its initial launch in China. Australian availability for the X Hybrid remains unconfirmed, though recent Australian Government data indicates a modest uptake of electric Lotus Eletre and Emeya models locally, with only one new unit imported in the latter half of last year.
The decision to introduce a hybrid system marks a notable departure from Lotus’s previous ambition to exclusively sell electric vehicles by 2028. This strategic shift is a direct response to the sales performance of the all-electric Eletre SUV and its Emeya sedan sibling. The “backflip” on their EV-only plans could also pave the way for the inclusion of a V8 engine in the Emira, Lotus’s only current petrol-powered sports car.
The X Hybrid Powertrain: A Blend of Power and Efficiency
At the heart of the X Hybrid system lies a potent combination of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and advanced electric motors. The petrol engine is rated to produce 150kW, while the electric motors, working in tandem, deliver a formidable 700kW and 935Nm of torque.
- Petrol Engine: A 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit.
- Capable of generating up to 25kWh of energy per hour of driving.
- Electric Motors: Front and rear units providing substantial power.
- Combined output of 700kW and 935Nm.
- Even with the battery at a 20 per cent state of charge, the motors can still deliver an impressive 550kW.
Lotus claims the Eletre X, equipped with this new hybrid setup, will be capable of accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in a brisk 3.3 seconds.

Redefining Range: 1200km Combined and 350km Electric
The combination of a 70kWh battery and the petrol generator is the key to the X Hybrid’s exceptional range. According to European WLTP lab testing conducted on Chinese-market models, the system is projected to achieve a hybrid range exceeding 1200 kilometres. Furthermore, drivers can expect up to 350 kilometres of pure electric driving range.

The X Hybrid system operates on a 900-volt architecture, a testament to its advanced technology. This high voltage system allows for incredibly rapid charging, with Lotus claiming the battery can be replenished from 20 per cent to 80 per cent in a mere nine minutes.
The Eletre X can function in multiple modes:
- Fully Electric: The vehicle operates solely on battery power, providing zero-emission driving.
- Hybrid Mode: Both the petrol engine and electric motors work together to power the wheels, optimising performance and efficiency.
- Range-Extender Mode: The petrol engine acts as a generator, producing energy to recharge the battery pack while the electric motors continue to drive the vehicle.
Performance and Luxury Features
Beyond its groundbreaking powertrain, the Eletre X is set to impress with a suite of high-performance and luxury features.
Performance Enhancements:
- 48-volt active anti-roll bars for superior handling and stability.
- An adjustable rear spoiler with four distinct positions to optimise aerodynamics.
- Advanced air suspension for a smooth and adaptable ride.
- Six-piston front brakes for exceptional stopping power.
Interior Comfort and Technology:
- Luxurious nappa leather upholstery.
- An immersive 23-speaker sound system for an unparalleled audio experience.
- An auto-dimming panoramic roof with 10 adjustable transparency levels, allowing occupants to control ambient light.

It is important to note that the performance figures and specifications confirmed to date are based on Chinese-market Eletre ‘For Me’ hybrid models. European market details are expected to be finalised and announced closer to the model’s launch in June. This strategic move by Lotus highlights a pragmatic approach to the evolving automotive landscape, balancing ambitious electrification goals with the practical demands of consumers and market realities.
