A chilling incident unfolded in Melbourne’s outer suburbs last year, with a masked man captured on camera calmly firing a pistol at a residential property. Investigators believe the perpetrator was not only carrying out the attack but was also meticulously documenting it on his own mobile phone. The brazen act occurred on Elmwood Place in Craigieburn just before 1pm on October 24.

CCTV footage from the scene reveals the man exiting a black Land Rover and proceeding to discharge three shots from what appears to be a handgun towards a house. Fortunately, the residence was unoccupied at the time of the shooting, meaning no one was physically harmed. However, the psychological impact on the residents, who later reported the incident, has been significant.
The suspect is described as being dressed entirely in black, including a hooded jumper and a face mask, further obscured by a balaclava. He was also wearing black tracksuit pants with a distinctive grey waistband and black shoes with white soles. After completing his assault, the man made a swift escape, heading south from the scene.
Police are treating this as a targeted incident, suggesting that the property or its occupants were specifically chosen.
A Shooter’s Self-Recording Strategy
Senior Constable Mitchell Jones addressed the media regarding the investigation, highlighting the disturbing detail that the gunman appeared to be recording the entire event on his personal device. “It doesn’t appear the shooting was intended to harm people,” Senior Constable Jones stated, “but it was potentially intended as a threat.” This suggests a calculated act designed to intimidate rather than cause physical injury.
The timeline of the investigation has presented challenges. The incident was not reported to the authorities until January, several months after it occurred. This delay, Senior Constable Jones confirmed, meant that police had not yet recovered the video footage the shooter was believed to have been recording.
The quality of the existing CCTV footage has also hampered progress. Its grainy nature has made it impossible for investigators to definitively identify the make and model of the Land Rover involved or to accurately determine the type of handgun used, beyond it being a pistol. Furthermore, the significant time lapse between the shooting and the report being filed meant that any potential ballistic analysis at the scene was no longer feasible.
Community Appeal for Information
Despite these hurdles, police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist their investigation. Senior Constable Jones emphasised that the residents of the targeted address were understandably “quite shocked and concerned” by the ordeal. The occupants have been cooperating fully with the police, providing their accounts of the incident.
At this stage, the shooting is being investigated as an isolated event. However, the nature of the attack, including the apparent self-recording by the perpetrator, raises serious questions about the motive and potential wider implications. Law enforcement is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, seen the black Land Rover in the area around the time of the shooting, or has any other relevant information, to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers. Every piece of information, no matter how small it may seem, could be crucial in identifying and apprehending the individual responsible for this disturbing act of violence. The community’s safety and the pursuit of justice remain paramount.
