Empowering Akwa Ibom’s Youth: A Triad of Skills, Tools, and Sustainable Futures
A significant initiative aimed at fostering self-reliance and economic empowerment among the youth of Akwa Ibom State has successfully concluded, equipping 250 participants with high-demand vocational and entrepreneurial skills. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in partnership with Wedgewood Integrated Investment Limited, not only imparted crucial knowledge but also provided tangible tools to kickstart sustainable businesses.
The three-week intensive program, themed ‘NCDMB Free Skills Empowerment Program On Business Scaling,’ concluded with a formal ceremony where trainees received essential starter packs. These kits were meticulously curated to align with the specific skills acquired during the training, ensuring immediate practical application and business viability.
A Comprehensive Empowerment Package
The distributed starter packs represent a strategic investment in the future of the trainees, designed to bridge the gap between acquired skills and market readiness. The breakdown of the empowerment kits highlights the program’s diverse focus:
- Business Scaling Kits: 72 kits, each containing a tablet with a keypad, mouse, and pen, are designed to enhance digital literacy and business management capabilities, enabling participants to effectively scale their ventures.
- Fashion and Design: 67 portable sewing machines, accompanied by mini sewing kits, will empower individuals trained in fashion design and tailoring to establish their own clothing businesses.
- Digital Skills and Marketing: 57 mini laptops are allocated to trainees specializing in graphics design, content creation, and digital marketing, equipping them with the tools to thrive in the digital economy.
- Technical Repair and Maintenance: 19 comprehensive GSM/mobile phone repair toolkits will enable beneficiaries to offer essential repair services, addressing a consistent market need.
- Renewable Energy Solutions: 35 solar installation toolkits are provided to trainees who acquired skills in solar energy systems, positioning them to contribute to and benefit from the growing renewable energy sector.
Addressing Market Realities and Youth Unemployment
Emmanuel Sanni, the Managing Director of Wedgewood Integrated Investment Limited, emphasized that the program’s design was a direct response to a thorough assessment of current market demands and the shortcomings of previous empowerment initiatives. He stated that the training in vocational and entrepreneurial skills is strategically aimed at enhancing employability and significantly reducing the persistent challenge of youth unemployment within Akwa Ibom State.
The curriculum was structured around five core areas identified as critical for establishing sustainable livelihoods: fashion trade, graphics and content development with a strong emphasis on social media marketing, solar installation, GSM/mobile phone repair and maintenance, and a robust business skilling module with an entrepreneurial focus.
Sanni further elaborated on the program’s philosophy, stating, “We redefined business for the participants as the ability to exchange skills for monetary value, and that mind-set change is the real secret behind the success of this programme.” This focus on a fundamental shift in perspective underscores the program’s commitment to fostering genuine self-sufficiency.
A Commitment to Sustainable Empowerment
Representing the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Mr. John Barigha, reiterated the board’s unwavering commitment to empowering youths. He articulated a philosophy that prioritizes equipping individuals with practical, long-term capabilities over providing temporary financial aid.
“We are not giving you fish; we are teaching you how to fish,” Barigha remarked during the closing ceremony. “What we have given you today is the net, and it is left for you to go into the sea and make meaningful use of it.” This powerful analogy highlights the program’s dedication to fostering independence and self-reliance.
The impact of the program was evident in the testimonials of the beneficiaries. One participant, who identified herself as Joyce, described the experience as transformative. She highlighted that the program not only imparted essential technical knowledge but also provided crucial business direction, setting her on a clear path towards entrepreneurial success. The combination of skills training, practical tools, and a revised business mindset promises to create a ripple effect of economic growth and opportunity within Akwa Ibom State.
