PPP Chief Seeks Presidential Summit on Key Issues

Opposition Leader Calls for Summit, Proposes National Renovation Task Force

Jang Dong-hyeok, leader of the People Power Party, has renewed his call for a summit meeting with President Lee Jae Myung, emphasizing the critical juncture facing the nation. Speaking at the National Assembly, Jang proposed the formation of a parliamentary-level ‘Republic of Korea Renovation Task Force (TF)’ to tackle pressing issues such as population decline and regional extinction.

During his address as the representative of the negotiation bloc, Jang declared, “This is the golden time for the Lee Jae Myung government,” making a fervent appeal for collaboration. He expressed his sincere hope that the government would not fail, viewing the proposed discussions as an opportunity to address the populace’s economic and livelihood challenges and to collectively devise solutions, rather than descend into political infighting.

The People Power Party intends to present the public’s concerns regarding critical issues like high inflation, volatile exchange rates, the real estate crisis in the capital region, and trade pressures from the United States. Jang stated that his party would articulate its proposed alternatives and expressed a desire for open and honest discussions on political matters, including the pursuit of special counsel investigations.

Jang highlighted the significance of a direct meeting between the President and the leader of the primary opposition party, asserting that such a dialogue would substantially alleviate public anxiety. He recalled President Lee’s own advocacy for eight summit meetings during his tenure as an opposition leader, suggesting this precedent underscores the importance of such high-level engagement.

Furthermore, Jang extended a proposal to the Democratic Party of Korea for joint efforts in finding rational solutions concerning the administrative integration of metropolitan governments. He stressed that without “revolutionary population and regional policies,” the nation is on an irreversible path towards a demographic cliff and regional annihilation. Jang called for a united front between the ruling and opposition parties, alongside experts from all sectors, to forge a sustainable future for the Republic of Korea.

He specifically addressed the momentum building around administrative integration in the lead-up to local elections, urging that discussions be framed within the context of a “regional revolution.” Jang revealed that his party has already put forth a special law aimed at initiating the integration of Daejeon and South Chungcheong Province, envisioning this as a pioneering model for broader administrative reforms.

Opposition Demands Further Special Counsel Investigations, Criticizes Judicial Overhaul

While acknowledging the need for accountability, Jang Dong-hyeok shifted focus to what he perceives as other critical areas requiring special counsel investigations. He suggested that beyond the ruling party’s proposed second comprehensive special counsel, there are other pressing matters that warrant scrutiny. Jang specifically proposed special counsels for:

  • The abandonment of the Daejang-dong appeal.
  • The Democratic Party of Korea-Unification Church gate.
  • Allegations of Democratic Party nomination bribery.

In a sharp critique, Jang accused President Lee and the Democratic Party of dedicating all their efforts to dismantling the judicial system. He characterized the National Assembly as having transformed into a “hub of legislative dictatorship” designed to eliminate political rivals and suppress the opposition.

Regarding the ruling party’s initiative to establish a special tribunal for insurrection, Jang drew a stark parallel, stating, “Dictatorship is not completed with guns and swords but with laws.” He contended that the Lee Jae Myung administration is “following the path of the Nazi regime’s special courts.” He issued a direct plea for President Lee and the Democratic Party to immediately withdraw the proposed second special counsel and the special tribunal for insurrection, and to cease all attempts to dismantle the prosecution services.

Criticism of Economic Policies: “Expansionary Fiscal Policies Denying Market Principles”

The opposition leader also leveled strong criticism against the government’s economic policies. He pointed to President Lee’s statement, “there is no market that can defeat the government,” as indicative of the administration’s fundamental misunderstanding of the market economy. Jang asserted that the government is actively pursuing “expansionary fiscal policies that deny market principles” and is steering the nation towards what he described as “Lee Jae Myung’s version of a basic society.” This suggests a concern that the administration’s economic direction deviates from established market-based principles, potentially leading to unsustainable economic practices.
