A Remarkable Journey from Tasmania to the Danish Throne
When Mary Donaldson was born in a small Tasmanian hospital in February 1972, few could have imagined that she would one day become Queen Mary of Denmark and sit on the throne of one of Europe’s oldest monarchies. Her story is a tale of love, transformation, and unexpected fame.
In a narrative that seems like a fairytale, Mary met her future husband, Prince Frederik, now King of Denmark, during the Sydney Olympics in September 2000. This encounter marked a turning point in her life, setting her on a path that would lead her into the royal family of Denmark. As their relationship blossomed, the world watched with fascination as a prince fell in love with a “commoner,” capturing the hearts of millions across the globe.

Mary’s family also found themselves thrust into the global spotlight alongside her. Billions of people followed the story of a young woman who became part of one of Europe’s most prestigious families. However, despite the attention, her family back in Australia remained grounded, choosing to live ordinary lives even though they were now connected to the Danish royal family.

Meet Queen Mary’s Parents
Queen Mary’s parents, John Dalgleish Donaldson and Henrietta Clark Donaldson, married in 1963 in their native Scotland. The couple later moved to Australia, where they became citizens after two years. Tragically, in November 1997, when Mary was just 25 years old, her mother passed away due to complications from heart surgery.

Her father, John, went on to remarry in 2001 to Susan Horwood, a British crime novelist who writes under the pen name Susan Moody. John Donaldson passed away on April 11, 2026, in Hobart, Tasmania, at the age of 84.
Siblings and Their Families
Queen Mary has two older sisters, Jane Alison Stephens (born in 1965) and Patricia Anne Bailey (born in 1968), as well as an older brother, John (born in 1970). Each of them has built their own lives, with their own families and personal stories.
- Jane shares three children with her husband, Craig Stephens.
- Patricia has two children from her first marriage to Ken Woods and a third child with an undisclosed partner.
- John and his wife Leanne have two daughters together.

Notably, Jane and Patricia served as bridesmaids at Mary’s wedding in 2004, along with her longtime best friend, Amber Petty.

Cousins and Extended Family
As the wife of King Frederik X of Denmark, Queen Mary is the aunt to her brother-in-law, Prince Joachim’s four children: Count Nikolai, Count Felix, Count Henrik, and Countess Athena. Additionally, her own children—Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine—have eight cousins spread across Australia.
These cousins include:
- Jane’s children: Alexander, Erin, and Kate, who grew up in Tasmania.
- Patricia’s children: Michael, Maddy, and Mollie, the latter from her second marriage.
- John’s children: Cherie and Michelle, who live in Perth.
