A Unique Moment on the Bookshelf Podcast
In a recent episode of his popular Bookshelf podcast, Ryan Tubridy found himself in an unexpected situation when his mother called. This moment not only highlighted the personal side of the well-known broadcaster but also gave listeners a glimpse into his relationship with his family.
Ryan is known for keeping his personal life private, especially when it comes to his mother, Catherine. He rarely shares details about her on social media, with only a few posts appearing after he moved to London in 2024. However, he has spoken openly about his mother, and she was present at his wedding to Dr Clare Kambamettu.
Following his departure from Virgin Radio in the UK, Ryan continued hosting The Bookshelf, but this week, he had to pause an episode due to an urgent call from his mother.
During the call, Ryan informed his producer that he would take the call, explaining that it was his mother. His mother immediately asked if he was in London, and Ryan confirmed that he was back in Ireland, recording his podcast.
“I’m in Dublin, but I’ll tell you what; I’m in the middle of something at the moment, I promise you I’ll call you afterwards. Is that okay?” Ryan said to his mother.
After telling her he would be about 30-40 minutes, his mother asked if he would call in to her. Ryan responded, “I’ll definitely call you — if I have time I’ll call into you as well, but I’ll definitely call you. Is that ok? All right.”

After hanging up, Ryan joked that his mother would likely call back within another 30 seconds to check on him, which he assured her he was fine. He also took the opportunity to pay tribute to his mother in a belated Mother’s Day message, saying, “We did have Mother’s Day together, which was really, really nice.”
A Busy Year for Ryan Tubridy
Ryan has had a busy year, with several new projects and appearances. In February, he returned to Irish screens as part of Virgin Media’s The Assembly, taking on a new role. The show featured Ryan being interviewed by 34 neurodivergent interviewers, a unique and challenging experience for him.
He expressed his gratitude to the interviewers, describing their questions as “the most wonderful, and at times, unexpected series of questions about my life and times…so far.” Ryan shared his thoughts on Instagram following the interview, highlighting the emotional and joyful nature of the experience.
“We sat together for three hours that became one on TV last night. It was emotional, kind, fair, unpredictable and joyful,” he wrote.
Ryan also praised the moderator, Muireann O’Connell, for her professionalism and the crew behind the scenes. He acknowledged the support from Darren Smith at Kite Entertainment and Virgin Media for creating a platform that allows viewers to see different aspects of society.
“I learned a lot and will be forever grateful,” he concluded.
A Personal Connection
The incident with his mother during the podcast not only showcased Ryan’s dedication to his work but also revealed the close bond he shares with his family. It reminded listeners that even the busiest of professionals have moments where personal connections take precedence.
Ryan’s ability to balance his professional commitments with his personal life is a testament to his character. Whether it’s through his podcast, his television appearances, or his interactions with his family, Ryan continues to engage and inspire his audience.
His journey over the past year has been filled with challenges and opportunities, and each experience has contributed to his growth as a broadcaster and a person. As he continues to explore new avenues in his career, his commitment to authenticity and connection remains evident.
