Bail Denied: Alleged Gang Links Raise Safety Concerns in Teen Murder Case
A Melbourne judge has refused bail for a 19-year-old man charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a teenage basketballer, citing ongoing concerns about his alleged ties to a youth gang and the potential risk to the community. The decision highlights the complexities of balancing an accused’s rights with public safety, particularly when gang affiliations are implicated in serious criminal activity.
The case revolves around the tragic death of Ater “Elia” Good, a 16-year-old who was gunned down in the inner-north Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in the early hours of January 3. Ater was walking with a friend when a vehicle, allegedly driven by the accused, Abdijalil Abdirahman Warsame, stopped beside them. According to Justice Michael O’Connell, two shots were fired from the car, with one striking Ater in the throat and damaging his jugular vein.
Following the shooting, Ater and his friend fled in separate directions. Tragically, Ater collapsed just metres from the Fitzroy Police Station. Detective Acting Inspector Brett Meadows, speaking to reporters at the time, recounted how an officer inside the station heard the gunshots and immediately responded, only to find the young victim, who could not be revived. The vehicle used in the alleged attack was later discovered to have been incinerated.
Police investigations suggest a potential link between this shooting and the stabbings of two men in the nearby suburb of Carlton just three days prior. Prosecutors have presented evidence suggesting that Warsame has a “long association” with the HTV youth gang. This gang reportedly has a history of animosity with a rival group known as 6z, with tensions escalating following alleged assaults on some HTV associates on New Year’s Eve. Justice O’Connell noted that members of the 6z gang had allegedly taunted HTV associates outside a hospital following these assaults.
The court heard about recorded conversations where Warsame allegedly expressed a need for a firearm, stating, “I need a gun, bro.” Further CCTV footage was presented, allegedly showing him at various locations in the car that was used on the night of the shooting. In a concerning development, it is alleged that Warsame admitted his involvement in the shooting to an associate and his brother, reportedly telling the latter, “this isn’t anyone else’s fault.”
Warsame’s bail application was based on several factors, including his lack of prior criminal history, his prospects of future employment, a medical condition that might make him vulnerable in custody, and the significant delays anticipated before his trial. His mother was prepared to offer a substantial bail guarantee, proposing two properties valued at $1.7 million, including the family home.
However, Justice O’Connell ultimately denied bail, citing the extreme nature and seriousness of the charges and the unacceptable risk he believed Warsame would pose if released back into the community. “His association with HTV and the ongoing conflict with other youth gangs remains real,” the judge stated, underscoring the perceived threat.
The loss of Ater Good has deeply affected his community. His basketball club, Collingwood All Stars, where he played for five years, remembered him as a quiet and dedicated young man who loved the sport and consistently strived to perform his best for his teams.
In addition to Abdijalil Abdirahman Warsame, three other individuals have been charged with Ater’s murder: Omar Omar, 21; Shakiib Farah Abdulkadir, 20; and Sella Rabih. The ongoing legal proceedings aim to bring those responsible for this senseless act of violence to justice.
