A tragic incident in Melbourne’s southwest has led to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy, who has been charged with culpable driving causing death following a fatal car rollover. The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, involved a grey Skoda sedan carrying seven teenagers.
The collision took place on Derrimut Road in Hoppers Crossing around midnight. Tragically, a 15-year-old boy was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
Another occupant, a 16-year-old girl, sustained severe injuries, including broken legs. She was seated in the front passenger seat and remains in hospital, where she is expected to be interviewed by police.
Two further passengers, a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, were also arrested at the scene. The 16-year-old girl was subsequently released after police interviews. The 14-year-old boy was interviewed at the hospital and arrested, though his arrest is reportedly unrelated to the collision itself. The remaining two individuals who were in the Skoda fled the scene and are yet to be located by authorities.
Police allege that the Skoda had been pursuing a Toyota vehicle after an incident at the Tarneit Central Shopping Centre earlier on Friday. It is understood that the occupants of the Toyota felt intimidated and contacted emergency services. They were advised to drive to the nearest police station.
The Toyota then allegedly began to increase its speed in an attempt to evade the Skoda. In response, the Skoda is accused of accelerating to speeds of up to 180 km/h, engaging in a high-speed chase on Derrimut Road.
During the pursuit, the Skoda allegedly collided with the rear of the Toyota, subsequently impacting two other vehicles before rolling into a front yard.
Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy, speaking at a press conference on Friday, emphasised the gravity of the situation. “This is not a PlayStation game where you can hit reset and start again,” he stated. “This is real lives, real situations that cannot be undone.”
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing. Police are appealing to the public for any information that may assist their inquiries and urge anyone with relevant details to contact Crime Stoppers.
