Young Life Lost, Three Injured in Tragic Northern Territory Highway Rollover
A devastating incident on the Stuart Highway near Katherine in the Northern Territory has resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy and left three 14-year-old boys hospitalised. The tragedy unfolded at approximately 6:00 AM this morning when a vehicle, believed to have been stolen, rolled over on the major thoroughfare, north of the Katherine Central Business District.
Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Tragically, the 16-year-old sustained critical injuries and was pronounced deceased at the location of the crash. The three younger boys, all 14 years of age, were transported to hospital for treatment of injuries that are currently not disclosed.
Northern Territory Police are now undertaking a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading up to the catastrophic event. Acting Commander Mark Grieve described the situation as a “tragic and complex” sequence of events.
“Our investigators will work tirelessly to establish the full circumstances surrounding these events,” Commander Grieve stated. “We continue to appeal to anyone with information, no matter how small they believe it to be, to come forward and assist us in piecing together what happened.”
A Chain of Alleged Incidents
Authorities have been provided with information suggesting a series of alleged offences preceded the fatal rollover. Police were reportedly alerted to the group of youths allegedly stealing a car from a property on Zimin Drive in Katherine late last night, around 10:30 PM.
The investigation is exploring the possibility that the occupants of this first stolen vehicle then travelled to Charles Darwin University. It is believed that the initial car was subsequently abandoned at the university campus, and two further vehicles were allegedly stolen from the premises.
Erratic Driving and Police Provocation
Throughout the night, reports indicate that the two allegedly stolen cars were observed driving in a highly erratic manner through the Katherine CBD. The behaviour of the occupants is alleged to have escalated, with police stating that they were deliberately attempting to provoke law enforcement officers. This alleged provocation included baiting patrol vehicles and throwing objects at the cars, which resulted in damage to one of the vehicles.
Police have indicated that the driving of the two cars was so dangerous that officers were unable to safely pursue them.
Ongoing Investigation and Road Closures
A significant crime scene has been established at the location of the rollover. As a result, sections of the Stuart Highway remain closed to traffic while police forensic investigators meticulously examine the scene and gather evidence. These closures are expected to impact travel in the area, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and exercise caution.
The Northern Territory Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed any part of the events, or who has any dashcam footage from the Katherine area during the relevant period, to contact them immediately. Information can be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
