Devastating Barrage: Russia Unleashes Massive Missile and Drone Assault on Ukraine, Claiming Lives and Widespread Damage
Ukraine endured a harrowing night as Russia launched a relentless barrage of missiles and drones across the country, resulting in a tragic loss of at least 11 lives and leaving dozens injured. The widespread attacks, which continued into the early morning hours, also trapped civilians beneath rubble and crippled vital infrastructure.
Moscow unleashed a formidable arsenal, deploying an estimated 73 missiles and a staggering 656 drones. The primary targets of this ‘massive strike,’ described by Russian authorities as utilising ‘high-precision weapons,’ were focused on Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, as well as energy and transport infrastructure deemed essential for the army’s operations. In total, hits were recorded at a minimum of 38 locations, with 30 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and 33 drones striking their intended targets. The aftermath saw debris from destroyed drones raining down on an additional 15 sites.
Devastation Across Key Cities
The impact of the assault was felt most acutely in several key Ukrainian cities:
Kyiv: The capital bore a significant brunt of the attack. At least four people were killed, and a grim tally of 58 individuals sustained injuries, including three children. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure across eight of the city’s districts suffered damage. In the Podilskyi district, a nine-story building sustained partial damage to its upper floors, leading to people being trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue efforts were ongoing in the early morning, even as air raid alerts persisted. The Solomianskyi district also saw damage to both a 20-story and a 24-story building. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported fires breaking out in a nine-storey apartment block due to falling debris, with residents feared trapped. Fires were also reported in open areas, including one near a kindergarten in the Obolon district, caused by burning vehicles struck by missile debris.
Dnipropetrovsk Region: The central Dnipropetrovsk region experienced significant casualties, with at least six people killed and 36 others injured following Russian strikes on the city of Dnipro. The situation tragically worsened when a second attack, occurring as first responders arrived at the scene of the initial strike, claimed the life of one rescuer.
Kharkiv: In the eastern city of Kharkiv, at least 14 people were injured. Residential homes, garages, and vehicles were damaged. A two-story residential building and part of a four-story apartment block sustained damage, with reports of people trapped beneath the debris of the larger structure.
Ukrainian Air Defences Under Strain
Ukrainian air defence forces worked valiantly throughout the night, successfully destroying and suppressing approximately 40 missiles and an impressive 602 drones. However, the sheer volume and nature of the attack highlighted ongoing vulnerabilities. Ukrainian officials have been actively urging their international allies to provide more air defence missiles, particularly to counter the threat posed by ballistic missiles. While Ukraine has demonstrated a high success rate in intercepting drones, ballistic missiles remain a significant challenge for its air defence capabilities.
Preceded by Warnings and Escalating Tensions
The nation had been on high alert for days, anticipating a renewed assault. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously warned of Russia’s preparations for a significant escalation, urging citizens to exercise caution and seek shelter during air raid alerts.
The latest barrage follows closely on the heels of Russia’s warning last week of ‘systematic strikes’ targeting ‘decision-making centres and command posts’ in Ukraine. Moscow had also advised foreign nationals and diplomats to leave the country and warned civilians to avoid government and military buildings. Russia cited a drone strike on a dormitory in Ukraine’s Russian-held Luhansk region as justification for its actions, though Ukraine denied carrying out that attack.
The conflict has seen a complex tit-for-tat of strikes. Between May 22 and May 24, strikes on Kyiv reportedly resulted in four fatalities and approximately 11 injuries. More recently, over the weekend, Ukraine claimed responsibility for drone attacks targeting an oil pumping station approximately 800 miles into Russian territory.
Plumes of smoke were observed rising from the Lazarevo pumping station in Kirov, a significant distance from the front lines. Ukraine stated that drones had targeted multiple energy and industrial sites deep within Russian territory, including ‘civil infrastructure’ in Saratov.
President Zelensky later confirmed his forces had targeted Russian fuel supplies. He shared a video showcasing the aftermath of these strikes, depicting fires and extensive smoke clouds over Russian territory. Zelensky asserted that these operations against Russian fuel facilities directly impede Vladimir Putin’s capacity to wage war, stating, “This is what genuinely impacts Russia’s potential for aggression. Russia could have ended this war with peace long ago, but it continues to choose prolongation and escalation.” The continued escalation underscores the grim reality of the ongoing conflict and the devastating impact on civilian populations.
