A Mysterious Portrait with a Rich Historical Legacy
A rare 400-year-old painting, currently housed in a former hunting lodge in Kent that once belonged to Henry VIII, has become the center of an intriguing historical mystery. The artwork features two teenage boys, one of whom is believed to be of African heritage, making it one of the earliest full-length depictions of a black individual in English art. Philip Sidney, heir to Penshurst Place, mentioned that records suggest the painting has been in the location since 1973. He noted that while the artwork has been on public display since 1947, it is only in recent years that there has been a surge in interest and questions about its origins.
Despite the lack of a known connection to Penshurst, the identities of the subjects remain a mystery. Sidney acknowledged that any potential link to the family can only be speculative. However, the original painting is set to return to Kent after spending 18 months on public display at the National Portrait Gallery, which will run from September until March 2028.
