The popular game show, The 1% Club, has captivated Australian audiences since its debut in 2022, presenting viewers with brain-teasing puzzles that challenge even the most lateral thinkers. The show’s format, featuring contestants from all walks of life, naturally led to a special episode designed for a younger demographic.

Young Minds Tackle Tricky Puzzles

The recent 1% Club kids’ special, which aired late last month, saw comedian Lee Mack host a hundred contestants aged between nine and fifteen. These bright young minds put their problem-solving skills to the test, vying for a coveted trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. While the questions were tailored for a younger audience, they proved to be just as challenging for viewers at home, sparking plenty of debate and head-scratching.


One particularly perplexing question emerged at the 25% stage of the game, with 26 contestants still in the running. The challenge presented was as follows:

‘On Hannah’s 6th birthday, she went to a theme park. She really wanted to ride this rollercoaster, but she was only one metre tall. Every year, Hannah gets five centimetres taller. How old will she be when she becomes able to ride the rollercoaster?’

Accompanying the question was an image of a sign clearly stating the ride’s requirements: ‘To ride, you must be at least 140cm tall or 12 years old.’

Lee Mack, ever the comedian, quipped, “This is just like being back at school, isn’t it, only with a really cool supply teacher.” Despite the seemingly straightforward nature of the problem, this question proved to be a significant hurdle, leading to the elimination of five contestants.


Upon first glance, the answer appeared to be a no-brainer: 12 years old, as that was the minimum age requirement. However, the puzzle was designed to be more nuanced, requiring a bit of mathematical reasoning. Contestants were informed that Hannah grew five centimetres each year. The task was to determine if she would reach the 140cm height requirement before her 12th birthday.

If Hannah were to reach the height requirement solely through growth, she would actually be 14 years old. However, Lee Mack clarified the logic: “On her 12th birthday, she’ll be able to ride the rollercoaster despite only being 130cm tall.” This highlighted that the age limit was the primary factor.

One of the young contestants, Matilda, explained her successful approach: “I looked at the question while you were reading it, and I didn’t work it out, so I just put 12.” This was, in essence, a lucky guess, but a remarkably accurate one. While many of the young participants grasped the concept, the question still managed to stump a fair number of adults watching from their living rooms.

One viewer took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration: “I’m out…because I didn’t read the sign properly.” This sentiment was echoed by another viewer who commented, “Fantastic series, and I’ve voted for the NTAs, but still didn’t get the 1% question right.”

The Elite Few: Reaching the 1%

Ultimately, five exceptionally bright contestants – Immie, Ellie, Finley, Alayna, and Olly – managed to navigate their way to the ultimate 1% question. Of these finalists, Ellie and Finley emerged victorious, earning themselves the coveted trips to Walt Disney World.

Their path to victory involved conquering the following challenge:

‘What number replaces the question mark in this pyramid?’

The pyramid presented a visual puzzle:
* Top Row: 9
* Second Row: 8, 10
* Third Row: 9, 7, [missing number]
* Bottom Row: 10, 8, 60, 20

The answer, which clinched the win for Ellie and Finley, was 13. The underlying logic of the pyramid was that each number in a row was the average of the two numbers directly beneath it.

While new episodes are eagerly awaited, the show continues to draw significant viewership with its weekend repeats, allowing audiences to play along from home. In a recent rerun, contestants Christopher and Scott battled to win a share of £95,000 by tackling a complex triangle-counting puzzle.


The question posed was: ‘How many triangles are there in this picture?’

This visual puzzle was deceptively difficult. While some triangles were immediately apparent, a closer inspection revealed many more hidden within the intricate design. The correct answer was 18. Christopher’s guess of eight was far from the mark, and Scott’s estimate of 19 was only slightly off.

These examples serve as a stark reminder that while The 1% Club is an enjoyable game to play along with, its questions can often confound even the most logical minds, especially when contestants are faced with the pressure of a 30-second time limit.
