Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19th, marks a pivotal moment in American history. It commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received news of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Today, Juneteenth is a recognised federal holiday across the United States, celebrated with community gatherings, educational events, vibrant music, delicious food, and heartfelt tributes to Black heritage and achievement.

Despite enduring centuries of discrimination, segregation, and systemic obstacles, Black artists, filmmakers, writers, and performers have profoundly shaped the entertainment industry, creating some of the most influential and groundbreaking works in cinematic history. To honour this enduring legacy and undeniable excellence, here are ten sensational films that absolutely deserve a place on your watchlist this Juneteenth.

A Showcase of Black Excellence in Film

These films not only entertain but also illuminate crucial aspects of Black history, culture, and the ongoing struggle for equality. They represent a diverse range of genres and storytelling approaches, each offering a unique perspective on the Black experience.

1. Black Panther

Black Panther transcended the typical superhero genre, captivating audiences with its narrative depth and earning three Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score. Its nomination for Best Picture was a historic achievement for a superhero film. This groundbreaking movie featured the first major superhero film with a predominantly Black cast, presenting a richly imagined, African-inspired world without succumbing to colonial perspectives.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars the late, great Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the Black Panther, in a compelling dual with Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger. Their ideological conflict forms the emotional core of the story, exploring themes of identity, legacy, and global responsibility against the backdrop of generational trauma. The supporting cast, including Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, and Letitia Wright as Shuri, further enrich the narrative, bringing intelligence, strength, and emotional grounding to the fictional nation of Wakanda.

2. Boyz n the Hood

Set against the gritty backdrop of South Central Los Angeles, Boyz n the Hood tells the story of Tre Styles, a young Black teenager raised by a disciplined father. Tre grapples with the pressures of street violence and peer influence while his friends, Doughboy and Ricky, navigate different paths shaped by gang life, ambition, and avoidance. The film unflinchingly portrays the tragic consequences of systemic neglect and violence, prompting reflection on how environment shapes destiny, yet individual choices still hold significant weight.

John Singleton made history with this film, becoming the youngest director ever nominated for an Oscar at 24 and the first Black American nominated for both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Praised for its raw realism and emotional resonance, Boyz n the Hood is considered a landmark of 1990s Black cinema. It shifted Hollywood’s portrayal of urban Black life away from stereotypes, offering instead a humanistic narrative that influenced subsequent films, television shows, and hip-hop storytelling.

3. BlacKkKlansman

Widely hailed as one of Spike Lee’s most powerful modern works, BlacKkKlansman earned an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and garnered nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. Released during a period of intense global discussion on racism, the film made its own indelible mark on cinema history. Based on a true story from the 1970s, it follows Ron Stallworth, the first Black detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department, portrayed by John David Washington. Stallworth masterfully orchestrates an undercover operation to expose organised racism within law enforcement and society.

The film also secured the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, with critics commending its sharp satire, compelling performances, and urgent political commentary. It achieved significant global box office success, earning approximately $90 million and sparking vital cultural conversations about race and policing. By transforming a true crime narrative into potent political cinema, the film skillfully balanced humour, tension, and righteous anger.

4. Get Out

Universally acclaimed for its incisive satire and nail-biting tension, Get Out marked Jordan Peele’s feature directorial debut. The film was a monumental commercial success, grossing over $250 million worldwide against a modest $4.5 million budget. This achievement made Peele the first Black writer-director to surpass $100 million with a debut feature. Get Out is widely credited with revitalising mainstream studio interest in Black horror, paving the way for filmmakers to use genre conventions for powerful political and social commentary.

Daniel Kaluuya stars as Chris Washington, a Black photographer visiting his white girlfriend’s seemingly liberal but isolated family estate. Beneath the veneer of politeness, a chilling truth slowly unravels, transforming initial unease into outright horror. The film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Lead Actor, solidifying its status as one of the decade’s most influential films.

5. 12 Years a Slave

Beyond its critical acclaim, including nine Academy Award nominations and three wins – Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o – 12 Years a Slave holds profound significance for its unflinching portrayal of Black resilience and historical truth. Adapted from Solomon Northup’s 1853 autobiographical memoir, the film is a harrowing biographical drama detailing the true story of a free-born African American musician from New York who is d** and sold into slavery, enduring twelve years of brutal bondage on Louisiana cotton plantations.

Directed by Steve McQueen and adapted by John Ridley, the film features Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, Michael Fassbender as Edwin Epps, Lupita Nyong’o as Patsey, Benedict Cumberbatch as William Ford, and Brad Pitt as Samuel Bass. Each performance anchors the narrative in stark emotional realism. The film was a critical and commercial triumph, grossing over $187 million globally on a $22 million budget, further cementing its place as one of the most powerful historical dramas of its era.

6. Sorry to Bother You

Sorry to Bother You is a 2018 satirical sci-fi comedy that chronicles the journey of Cassius “Cash” Green, an Oakland telemarketer who experiences an unexpected rise in corporate success by adopting a “white voice” to connect with clients. Directed and written by Boots Riley in his directorial debut, the film employs surrealism and absurdist humour to delve into themes of late-stage capitalism, racial assimilation, and labour exploitation within an increasingly dehumanising corporate landscape.

The cast includes LaKeith Stanfield as Cassius Green, Tessa Thompson as Detroit, Jermaine Fowler as Sal, Steven Yeun as Squeeze, Armie Hammer as Steve Lift, and Terry Crews as Sergio Green. Their performances contribute to the film’s chaotic yet deliberate tonal shifts. It emerged as a notable independent success, earning over $18 million against a modest budget and demonstrating the viability of unconventional, Black-led arthouse cinema.

7. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom carries immense cultural weight, exploring artistic autonomy, racial exploitation, and historical erasure with vital storytelling. Directed by George C. Wolfe, the film showcases Viola Davis in a commanding performance as Ma Rainey and Chadwick Boseman in his final, incandescent role as Levee, supported by Colman Domingo as Cutler.

The film is set in a sweltering, high-pressure 1920s Chicago recording studio during a tense session where Ma Rainey clashes with her white manager and producer over creative control. Meanwhile, her band waits in a cramped, suffocating rehearsal room, their relationships fraying under the weight of ambition, frustration, and buried trauma.

Universally acclaimed, the film boasts a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its electrifying performances, rich cultural texture, and faithful adaptation of August Wilson’s stage play. It also achieved significant success on Netflix, produced on an estimated $20–30 million budget, establishing itself as a powerful and resonant piece of modern Black cinema.

8. Straight Outta Compton

Directed by F. Gary Gray, Straight Outta Compton features O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, and Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E. They are joined by Paul Giamatti as their controversial manager, Jerry Heller, forming a cast that grounds the story in both emotional intensity and lived authenticity. Their music served as a potent form of protest and testimony, transforming hip-hop into an unfiltered political and social outlet. Tracks like ‘F*** tha Police’ resonated deeply with audiences facing systemic harassment and police brutality, their echoes reaching into modern movements such as #BlackLivesMatter.

Simultaneously, their journey highlighted how marginalised voices could forge independent creative and financial power, inspiring generations of artists to claim ownership of their narratives and industries. The film holds profound cultural significance for the Black community, particularly in its portrayal of N.W.A. as a voice for the voiceless. The group became renowned for their refusal to compromise their truth, openly articulating the realities of being young, Black, and marginalised in America, giving expression to experiences frequently ignored or silenced.

9. Creed

Creed follows Adonis “Donnie” Johnson, the illegitimate son of former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan. Growing up between foster homes and privileged surroundings, Donnie struggles with his identity and the weight of a name he feels he hasn’t fully earned. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film also features Sylvester Stallone reprising his iconic role as Rocky Balboa, alongside Tessa Thompson as Bianca, Phylicia Rashad as Mary Anne Creed, and Tony Bellew as the formidable champion “Pretty” Ricky Conlan.

The film was widely praised by critics, with particular acclaim for Stallone’s emotional performance, Coogler’s direction, and its striking cinematography, which earned Stallone an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. It was also a major box office success, grossing over $173 million worldwide on a $35 million budget, launching a successful franchise that continues to expand the Creed universe. Beyond its commercial impact, the film holds significant cultural importance for Black representation in mainstream Hollywood, placing a complex Black protagonist at the forefront of a global sports franchise and redefining legacy-driven storytelling.

10. One Night in Miami

One Night in Miami offers a fictionalised account of a real gathering on February 25, 1964. On this night, a 22-year-old Cassius Clay, later the legendary Muhammad Ali, shocks the sports world by defeating Sonny Liston and celebrates with three of his closest friends in Miami’s historic Overtown neighbourhood. What begins as a quiet after-party quickly evolves into an intense, philosophical discussion. Segregation laws force the four men into a modest motel room, transforming the space into a pressure cooker for conversations on fame, civil rights, and political responsibility.

Directed by Oscar-winner Regina King in her critically acclaimed feature directorial debut, the film features Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, Eli Goree as Cassius Clay / Muhammad Ali, Leslie Odom Jr. as Sam Cooke, and Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown. Each delivers a layered performance, imbuing the real-life icons with profound emotional depth. The film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay, for its masterful exploration of the burdens of celebrity and the responsibilities that accompany influence, questioning whether Black public figures should leverage their platforms for activism or personal advancement. These ten films undoubtedly deserve a prominent spot on your Juneteenth watchlist.
