MG 4 EV Urban Set to Hit Australian Shores in 2026, Challenging the Budget EV Market
Australians can mark their calendars for April 2026, as MG has officially confirmed the arrival of its new electric hatchback, the MG 4 EV Urban. This new entrant is poised to shake up the rapidly expanding segment of affordable electric vehicles (EVs) Down Under.
Unlike its existing MG 4 sibling, which offers buyers the flexibility of rear- or all-wheel drive configurations, the upcoming MG 4 EV Urban will be exclusively offered as a front-wheel-drive model, powered by a single electric motor. Prospective buyers will have a choice between two battery options: a 43kWh or a larger 54kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit. While pricing and detailed specifications for the Australian market are yet to be unveiled, the company has indicated that this model will be positioned as a more budget-friendly option.
This strategic move by MG follows confirmation that the MG 4 EV Urban will be sold alongside an updated version of the current MG 4. The updated model is set to undergo some revisions, with the 51kWh and 77kWh battery options being phased out in favour of a sole 64kWh pack. Overseas markets have already seen the unveiling of an overhauled interior for the MG 4, with the right-hand drive version recently revealed for the UK. MG Motor Australia has been contacted for clarification on when local customers can expect to see this updated MG 4.
In the UK, the new MG 4 EV Urban is priced approximately £6500 (around A$12,400) lower than its updated MG 4 counterpart. For context, the current MG 4 range in Australia kicks off at $37,990 before on-road costs, with current promotional offers even bringing drive-away pricing below this figure.

Industry observers anticipate the MG 4 EV Urban’s price tag in Australia will likely fall closer to the $30,000 mark rather than $40,000. However, it remains to be seen if MG will manage to undercut the $30,000 barrier, a feat achieved by the BYD Dolphin Essential which launched at $29,990 before on-road costs.
While comprehensive Australian specifications are still under wraps, the MG 4 EV Urban is already available in right-hand drive markets, such as the UK, providing a glimpse of what to expect.
Underpinnings and Dimensions
The MG 4 EV Urban is built upon the Chinese automaker’s new E3 platform. A notable departure from the standard MG 4’s multi-link independent rear suspension is the Urban’s adoption of a torsion-beam rear setup.
In terms of physical dimensions, the MG 4 EV Urban measures:
* Length: 4395mm
* Width: 1842mm
* Height: 1551mm
* Wheelbase: 2750mm

These figures make it slightly larger than the existing MG 4, being 108mm longer, 6mm wider, and up to 47mm taller, with a wheelbase extended by 45mm. Practicality is also a strong point, with a generous boot capacity ranging from 568 to 577 litres when measured to the roofline. This can be further expanded to an impressive 1364 litres by folding down the rear seats.
Performance and Charging
The front-mounted electric motor in the MG 4 EV Urban delivers a power output between 110kW and 118kW, coupled with 250Nm of torque. This translates to a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of between 9.5 and 9.6 seconds, depending on the specific variant.
Charging capabilities are also a key consideration for EV buyers. MG claims that the battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes using a 150kW DC fast charger. For slower, everyday charging, the MG 4 EV Urban also supports 11kW AC charging.

Range Estimates (WLTP):
* Smaller Battery (43kWh): 325km
* Larger Battery (54kWh): Between 405km and 416km
Interior and Technology
Inside the cabin, at least based on the UK market configuration, the MG 4 EV Urban boasts a modern and tech-focused environment. Key interior features include:
- A prominent 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
- A 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver.

Standard equipment in the UK market highlights MG’s commitment to providing comprehensive features even at a lower price point. This includes:
* Automatic LED headlights.
* 16-inch alloy wheels (with 17-inch options available).
* A heat pump for efficient cabin climate control.
* Automatic climate control.
* Seamless wireless integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
* Satellite navigation.
* A comprehensive suite of active safety and driver-assist technologies.
Key Safety and Driver Assist Features:
* Adaptive cruise control.
* Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
* Blind-spot monitoring.
* Driver monitoring system.
* Lane-keep assist.
* Rear cross-traffic alert.
* Safe exit warning.
* Traffic Jam Assist.
Optional equipment available on higher trims or as standalone additions can further enhance the driving experience. These can include:
* Ambient interior lighting.
* Heated front seats for added comfort.
* A heated steering wheel wrapped in leather.
* A wireless smartphone charger.
* A surround-view camera system, which notably includes a “transparent chassis” mode for improved low-speed manoeuvring.

MG Motor Australia emphasised the cost-saving benefits of EVs in its press release, stating, “As cost of living remains top of mind and petrol prices continue to fluctuate faster than drivers can read the sign, the fully electric MG 4 EV Urban offers greater cost certainty and freedom from fuel price volatility.”
The Competitive Landscape
The MG 4 EV Urban enters a fiercely competitive small electric hatchback segment. It will face off against established Chinese rivals such as the BYD Dolphin and the GWM Ora. The market is also set to welcome further contenders in the near future:
- GAC Aion UT: Expected arrival in the second quarter of 2026.
- Geely EX2: Scheduled for release in the second half of 2026.
- Chery: Also anticipated to enter the fray with its own EV offerings.
The benchmark for affordability in this segment has been significantly lowered by the BYD Atto 1, which launched in late 2025 priced from just $23,990 before on-road costs. While the Atto 1 is considerably smaller than the upcoming MG 4 EV Urban, Geely EX2, and GAC Aion UT, it sets a challenging price point for these larger models to match. It remains uncertain if any of these newcomers will be able to achieve pricing as aggressive as the BYD Atto 1.
