Makeup Sex: A Patch, Not a Cure?

Do arguments with your partner frequently spill over into the bedroom? While the idea of passionate “make-up sex” after a disagreement might seem like a natural way to reconnect, experts are suggesting it might not be the solution many couples believe it to be. In fact, relying on sex to smooth over conflict could be preventing genuine resolution and deeper intimacy.

This article delves into the complexities of post-argument intimacy, exploring why it can feel so intense, how to identify if it’s becoming an unhealthy pattern, and crucially, how to leverage those moments of closeness to foster true understanding and lasting repair in your relationship.

The Biology of Post-Argument Arousal

When couples engage in conflict, their bodies are flooded with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. According to Armin Ariana, a sexologist and president of the Society of Australian Sexologists Queensland branch, this hormonal surge can create a sense of “emotional discomfort.” However, he notes that paradoxically, this activation can also stimulate the body’s desire centres.

“It’s not necessarily giving you a readiness for sex, but it is bringing a little bit of arousal in,” Dr. Ariana explains. “The soothing thing that you get from [sex] is helping your nerves to calm down.”

Megan Luscombe, a relationship coach based in Boonwurrung/Mount Martha on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, agrees that for some, sex can act as a “release valve” after a heated exchange. “The nervous system is activated, you’re both fully present,” she says. “When the tension breaks there’s an enormous amount of energy that needs somewhere to go.”

However, clinical sexologist and relationship counsellor Tanya Koens points out that not everyone experiences sex after a fight in the same way. “They might feel like the boundaries have been crossed or they haven’t been understood, which may not feel as safe or as exciting as it does for others.” She stresses that as long as the sexual activity is not coerced, or undertaken out of a sense of obligation to “keep the peace,” it’s not inherently problematic.

Is It Really “Make-Up Sex”?

Ms. Luscombe suggests that the popular term “make-up sex” might need a rethink, as it often implies that the argument has been resolved or that repair has occurred. More often, she believes, what’s happening is that the peak intensity of the argument has subsided, and the couple needed a release, which sex provided.

“Calling it make-up sex lets people off the hook from having the actual conversation,” Ms. Luscombe argues. “The thing you were fighting about is still sitting on the kitchen bench waiting for you on Tuesday morning.”

Dr. Ariana advocates for enjoying the closeness that sex brings but strongly advises couples to return to the unresolved issues. “If this becomes, ‘we can do it and there’s no harm done’, do it,” he says. “But don’t use it to avoid that kind of conversation that needs to happen. The underlying problem will remain unresolved.”

Understanding the Meaning Behind the Intimacy

The meaning individuals attach to sex can vary significantly. Ms. Koens suggests that couples should have open conversations afterwards to clarify what the intimacy signifies for each of them. “You can ask, what does this mean? Are we still fighting? Have we solved things?” she advises.

She draws a parallel to “break-up sex,” where individuals might engage in intimacy with an ex-partner because the previous points of contention no longer bother them. In such cases, a couple might mistakenly believe great “break-up sex” means they should reconcile. “It’s really all about the meaning that you’re putting towards the sex,” Ms. Koens states.

Experts also caution that couples can confuse the intense physical sensations of post-argument sex with genuine intimacy. “Intensity and intimacy feel similar in the body, your heart rate is up, you’re hyperaware of the other person, there’s a kind of electric aliveness to it,” Ms. Luscombe observes. “But intimacy is actually built in the quiet moments, the conversations that aren’t heated, the repair that happens when nobody’s adrenaline is running the show.” She notes that couples who have relied on intensity for years often report feeling “simultaneously very passionate and very lonely.”

Harnessing Post-Conflict Sex for Better Communication

If you recognise that sex after conflict has become a recurring pattern in your relationship, there are ways to use it constructively. Dr. Ariana highlights the physiological benefits of sex, such as the release of endorphins, dopamine, and oxytocin. “That would be a good time to open up, to have the conversation [about the issue] because the connection and the intimacy build that emotional safety.”

These post-sex neurochemicals are associated with increased kindness and generosity, according to Ms. Koens. “So, if you’ve been having sexy times, it might be easier to talk to your partner afterwards, when you’re feeling a little bit more relaxed and a little bit closer.”

Ms. Luscombe emphasises that the first step to breaking an unhealthy cycle is simply acknowledging it. “Noticing that the fight ended in bed and the conversation never actually finished,” she says. “Then having that conversation, the one that feels less urgent once the adrenaline has dropped, but is actually the most important one.” She suggests that some couples might benefit from professional guidance from a counsellor to navigate these complex dynamics.

Dr. Ariana offers another strategy for couples caught in this pattern: intentional pausing. “Try to practice something like mindfulness, calm down first or intentionally pause,” he recommends. “It is better to pause after the conflict and try to force a more genuine repair.” This conscious decision to step back and address the underlying issues, rather than immediately seeking physical resolution, can pave the way for more authentic connection and lasting resolution.
