Donald Scarinci, a member of the bipartisan Citizens Advisory Committee, pointed out that the $1 coin bearing Trump’s image would likely violate a law prohibiting the image of a sitting or former president from appearing on a dollar coin until three years after their death. However, there may be a potential loophole. The gold coin, intended as a collector’s item, might not be subject to the same restrictions as the dollar coin, which would be in circulation.

Despite these legal concerns, Scarinci noted that both his panel and the Commission of Fine Arts are meant to approve the coin. However, he added that they still expect the administration to proceed with minting both coins.
