Albanese Declares No Mourning for Iran’s Supreme Leader Following US Strikes
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unequivocally stated that Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, “will not be mourned” following his reported death in US airstrikes. The Prime Minister launched a strong condemnation of the hardline cleric, attributing to him responsibility for severe domestic repression and persistent international destabilisation.
“Ayatollah Khamenei was responsible for the regime’s nuclear program, support for armed proxies and its brutal violence against its own people,” Albanese declared on Sunday. He elaborated that Khamenei’s actions had resulted in the loss of “countless lives in Iran, but also internationally.” The Prime Minister specifically pointed to Khamenei’s alleged orchestration of attacks on Australian soil, underscoring the personal impact on Australia. “His passing will not be mourned,” Albanese stated firmly.
These pointed remarks represent one of the most robust foreign policy pronouncements of Albanese’s premiership, diverging from the typically measured language leaders often adopt when a foreign head of state dies. Khamenei, who ruled Iran with an iron grip for decades, was central to the nation’s controversial nuclear ambitions, provided backing for influential regional proxy groups, and oversaw severe crackdowns on anti-government protests. Human rights organisations have consistently accused the Iranian regime of violent repression, mass arrests, and executions during periods of civil unrest.
Albanese’s comments arrive amidst a period of significant global uncertainty regarding the potential ramifications of Khamenei’s death on the Middle East’s delicate power balance and the subsequent succession. When questioned about whether Australia should intensify its support for a regime change in Iran following the US-Israel offensive, Albanese maintained that such a decision rests “with the Iranian people.”
He acknowledged the concerns of many Australians, stating, “I understand there are thousands of Australians with loved ones in the Middle East.” The Prime Minister cautioned that “the days ahead are going to be difficult” and reiterated his government’s primary focus. “My government’s priority remains the safety of Australians in the region. The government will do all we can to keep Australians safe and our personnel who are there in the region, as well.”
Albanese expressed deep concern about the potential for regional escalation. “We support the states acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent Iran from continuing [to] threaten international peace [and] security,” he said. “We are concerned (about) regional escalation and urge the protection of civilians for those on the ground.”
“Australian officials are closely monitoring what is an evolving situation, unfolding rapidly,” Albanese added. Earlier, when asked about the possibility of Australia deploying troops, Foreign Minister Penny Wong clarified that Australia “did not participate in the strikes and you would not expect us to participate.” When pressed for further clarification, she reiterated, “you would not expect us… to participate.”

Speaking on Sky News, WA Liberal MP and former SAS veteran Andrew Hastie offered his perspective on the US President Donald Trump’s decision to launch airstrikes. Hastie labelled Trump an “apex opportunist” but also voiced concerns about the implications of forceful regime change.
“I’m not surprised that President Trump has taken this action along with Prime Minister Netanyahu,” Hastie commented. “There’s a lot of risk and as a veteran of the so-called Forever Wars, I’m very suspicious about regime change by force.” He continued, “But Iran has a terrible regime – they’re a proxy, they’re underwritten by Chinese and Russian tech.”
Hastie suggested that the strike also served as a demonstration of American resolve. “So, this is also a demonstration by President Trump that he is re-establishing deterrence and he’s also going to send a message to some of his other geopolitical competitors that US military technology is superior.” He drew a parallel to previous events, noting, “He made that point after Venezuela, defeating Russian and Chinese tech in their air defences. I assume the same point will be made post this operation as well.”
International Reactions and UN Security Council Session
Iranian state media officially confirmed the death of its supreme leader shortly after President Trump’s announcement on social media. The state broadcaster IRIB reported, “The supreme leader of Iran has reached martyrdom.” Further reports indicated that Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter were also casualties of the US and Israeli strikes. The Fars news agency confirmed, “After establishing contact with informed sources in the Supreme Leader’s household, the news of the martyrdom of the daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter of the Revolutionary Leader has unfortunately been confirmed.”
During an emergency session convened by the UN Security Council, Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack, warning of its potential to destabilise the region. The session revealed a stark division, with representatives from the US and Israel asserting the attack was in the global interest, while Iran’s counterpart, Amir Saeid Iravani, denounced it as a “war crime.”
“It is regrettable that some members of this body, in a blatant double standard, disregard the flagrant act of aggression committed by the US and Israel on Iran, and condemn Iran for using its inherent right to self-defence in the UN Charter,” Iravani stated.
