Urgent Takedown Requests Issued for Toys with “Potentially Deadly” Magnets
Online retail giants Amazon and eBay, along with other major platforms like Kogan and Fruugo, are facing urgent calls from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to remove toys containing small, powerful magnets. These magnets have been permanently banned from sale in Australia due to the severe and potentially catastrophic internal injuries they can inflict if swallowed, particularly by young children.
Despite the existing ban, the ACCC’s investigations have revealed that these hazardous products are still readily available for purchase through online marketplaces, prompting the consumer watchdog to take decisive action. The magnets are often incorporated into various toys and games, including popular items like Magnetic Chess and Magnetic Battle Chess.
The ACCC is now actively urging these online retailers to promptly remove all listings of these banned products and to implement more robust measures to prevent their future sale to Australian consumers.
The Grave Dangers of Swallowed Magnets
ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe highlighted the extreme danger posed by these small but potent magnets. “Small, high-powered magnets can cause catastrophic, life-threatening internal injuries if swallowed, particularly for young children,” she stated.
The primary concern is that if a child swallows multiple magnets, they can attract each other within the digestive system. This can lead to severe complications, including:
- Intestinal Perforation: Magnets sticking together can pinch and tear the intestinal walls.
- Tissue Necrosis: The pressure and magnetic attraction can cut off blood supply to sections of the intestine, leading to tissue death.
- Blockages: The magnets can create obstructions within the digestive tract.
“They are a choking risk,” Ms. Lowe added, underscoring the immediate danger. “We are extremely concerned that our investigation has detected sellers listing these banned products on online marketplaces and we urge all online marketplaces to do more to prevent listings of these products to keep consumers, especially young children, safe.”

ACCC’s Proactive Measures and Retailer Commitments
In response to the ongoing availability of these dangerous toys, the ACCC has reinforced a mandatory product safety standard specifically for toys containing these types of magnets. This standard aims to provide a clear framework for compliance and enforcement.
Following the ACCC’s takedown requests, Amazon, eBay, Kogan, and Fruugo have all committed to taking immediate steps. These commitments include:
- Issuing Warnings: The retailers will be actively warning customers about the significant risks associated with these magnetic toys.
- Offering Refunds: Amazon, Kogan, and Fruugo have gone a step further by offering full refunds to any customers who have already purchased these prohibited products.
Consumer Advisory: Stop Use and Seek Refunds
The ACCC is strongly advising consumers who may have purchased these types of magnetic toys to:
- Cease Use Immediately: Do not allow children to play with these toys.
- Store Safely: Keep the products well out of reach of children.
- Contact the Seller: Reach out to the retailer from whom the product was purchased to arrange for a refund.
“Online marketplaces have a critical role in preventing listings of unsafe or banned products,” Ms. Lowe emphasised. “We are continuing to engage with online marketplaces to ensure affected customers are contacted and warned about the risks and that adequate steps are taken to prevent future listings of these products.”
A Long-Standing Ban and Online Retailer Vigilance
It is important to note that a nationwide ban on certain types of small, high-powered magnets has been in place in Australia since 2012. This ban was implemented to address the documented dangers these products pose.
An Amazon spokesperson commented on the company’s commitment to online safety. “Customer safety is our top priority and we have implemented a policy which prohibits magnetic battle chess games from being listed in our store, regardless of whether those products can be lawfully sold in Australia,” they stated.
The company outlined its multi-layered approach to product monitoring:
- Advanced AI Models: Amazon utilises sophisticated artificial intelligence to continuously scan product listings.
- Dedicated Safety Teams: Human oversight from specialised teams complements the AI systems.
- Proactive Identification: The goal is to identify and remove risky items before they reach consumers.
- Swift Action: When a product bypasses their controls, Amazon pledges to act quickly to remove it.
“Amazon is proud to be a founding signatory of the ACCC’s product safety pledge, and we remain focused on providing the best experience for our Australian customers,” the spokesperson concluded, reinforcing their dedication to consumer well-being.
