Unveiling a Reservoir Mystery: Technology Recreates Face of Deceased Man
A chilling mystery surrounding a badly decomposed body discovered in a remote Welsh reservoir has taken a significant step forward, thanks to cutting-edge technology previously employed to reconstruct the face of King Richard III. Police are now appealing to the public for help in identifying the man, found floating in a wetsuit in the Claerwen reservoir in October 2024.
Investigators are keeping all avenues open, including the possibility that the man is a victim of foul play. The deliberate placement of the body in a wetsuit and its subsequent disposal in the reservoir may have been an attempt to mislead authorities and obscure his identity. Despite exhaustive efforts, including running his DNA, fingerprints, and dental records through national and international databases, no match has been found.
The breakthrough in the case came when the lead investigator, Inspector Anthea Ponting of Dyfed-Powys Police, recalled the remarkable achievement of scientists who recreated the likeness of King Richard III from skeletal remains unearthed decades after his death.
“I thought if they could do that from remains found 500 years ago, they might be able to help us,” Inspector Ponting stated. “Our man has no tattoos, jewellery, or identifying marks, so our best hope is to see what he looked like.”

Inspector Ponting reached out to Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University, a renowned centre that blends art and science to generate detailed facial imaging. It was the same team at Face Lab that had previously crafted a digital, speaking avatar of King Richard III, utilising forensic cranial reconstruction techniques on his remains discovered in 2013.
The Face Lab team was provided with a comprehensive package of information regarding the reservoir victim. This included photographs, a post-mortem report, a forensic dental report, and a CT scan of the unidentified man. Using sophisticated medical imaging software, a 3D model of the skull was meticulously created. The man’s dental records proved particularly valuable, allowing the team to accurately reconstruct the shape of his lower face and mouth, noting distinctive features such as protruding teeth and a crossbite on the left side.
Further estimations were made for the contours of his lips and nose, incorporating the underlying musculature. The analysis indicated a man with a rounded chin, a square jawline, and a downturned nose.
“Thanks to Face Lab, we have now been provided with a very clear and detailed estimation of what the man looked like,” said Detective Inspector Ponting. “The image has already been processed through the Police National Computer and has been shared with Interpol. This is someone’s family member, and I would like nothing more than to return him to his loved ones who might be missing him.”
The discovery of the body was made by a dog walker at the expansive 650-acre Claerwen reservoir, a vital water source for Birmingham and the West Midlands. Police remain perplexed by the circumstances, as no abandoned vehicles were found in nearby car parks, nor were any personal belongings discovered in the isolated and picturesque location.
DI Ponting elaborated on the limited clues available prior to the facial reconstruction: “Until now, the only item available to progress our investigation was the wetsuit the man was wearing, which provided us with limited information around his height and weight. We are looking for a breakthrough to discover who he is, where he came from, and how he lost his life. We want people to have a close look at the man’s face and if you think you know him, please come forward.”
Authorities are maintaining an open mind regarding the cause of the man’s death and the reason no one has reported him missing over the preceding 15 months. The post-mortem examination indicated that the man, estimated to be between 30 and 60 years old, had been in the water for up to 12 weeks.
The wetsuit, identified as a Zone 3 Agile model in Extra Large, suggests the man was over 6 feet tall, weighed approximately 202–220 lbs (92–100 kg), and had a chest measurement of 44–48 inches (112–122 cm).
Professor Caroline Wilkinson, Director of Face Lab, highlighted the significance of their work: “Facial depiction from human remains can act as a tool for recognition, providing new lines of investigation in relation to identity. Hopefully, someone who knew this man will now recognise his face, and our facial depiction can support the police to finally identify him.”

The hope is that this scientifically generated image will jog the memory of someone, somewhere, who can provide the crucial piece of information needed to solve the mystery of the man in the reservoir and bring closure to his unknown family.
