US Ambassador Halts Diplomatic Ties with Polish Sejm Speaker Over Trump Remarks
The United States Ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, has taken an extraordinary step by immediately ceasing all diplomatic engagement with the Speaker of the Polish Sejm, Wlodzimierz Czarzasty. This abrupt severance of contact marks a significant and rare development in the usually robust relationship between the two allied nations. Ambassador Rose announced, “As of today, we will no longer maintain contact or communicate with Marshal Czarzasty of the Sejm.”
While Ambassador Rose did not explicitly detail the specific transgressions, the move follows a public statement made by Mr. Czarzasty on Monday. In this statement, the Polish politician declared his opposition to an initiative by his Israeli and American counterparts to nominate US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Mr. Czarzasty is a prominent figure within the New Left party, a component of the liberal government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The US diplomat’s announcement, disseminated via social media, underscored that the relationship with the New Left leader poses a “serious obstacle” to the partnership between Washington and the Tusk administration. Ambassador Rose clarified that this decision is effective immediately and encompasses both official meetings and all forms of communication. He characterised Mr. Czarzasty’s remarks concerning President Trump as “outrageous and unwarranted insults,” asserting that such statements contravene the expected standards of respect from senior representatives of allied nations. The US Embassy’s communiqué also emphasised the critical importance of respecting the US head of state and upholding diplomatic principles, which are foundational to the stability of bilateral relations.
Czarzasty’s Stance on Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize Nomination
The diplomatic standoff was triggered by Speaker Czarzasty’s forthright rejection of the proposal to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump. This came despite an appeal made public by representatives from both the US Congress and the Israeli Knesset. Mr. Czarzasty articulated his reasoning, stating that he believes President Trump’s political actions have not contributed to global peace and have, in fact, undermined established international legal norms.
In his candid remarks on Monday, Mr. Czarzasty unequivocally stated that Trump “does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.” He elaborated by describing Trump’s approach as one that “represents power politics and, by the use of force, pursues transactional politics.” The Polish politician further contended that this often translates into “breaking international law.”
Specific criticisms from Mr. Czarzasty included President Trump’s perceived lack of recognition for the contributions of Polish soldiers in US military missions. He also pointed to what he termed the “instrumental treatment of other territories,” citing Greenland as an example. Furthermore, Mr. Czarzasty expressed skepticism regarding President Trump’s broader vision for global diplomacy. He commented, “The construction of new platforms by the United States, such as the Peace Council, is in my opinion illusory. We need to strengthen the European Union, NATO, the UN, WHO and ourselves.”

Despite the escalating diplomatic tensions, Mr. Czarzasty reiterated his position on Thursday evening. He affirmed his respect for the United States as a crucial ally for Poland but maintained that he would not alter his stance. He stressed that his decisions are guided by an independent assessment of international affairs, rather than a desire to provoke conflict with the US.
Prime Minister Tusk’s Reaction and Ambassador Rose’s Response
Prime Minister Donald Tusk was swift to react to Ambassador Rose’s announcement. He posted on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “Mr Ambassador Rose, allies should respect, not lecture, each other.”
Ambassador Rose, however, remained steadfast in his position. He replied to Prime Minister Tusk, acknowledging that while Tusk himself is “a model ally and great friend of the United States,” Mr. Czarzasty’s comments were “potentially damaging to your government.” Rose further warned that insulting Trump, whom he described as “the greatest friend Poland has ever had in the White House,” was “the last thing” a Polish leader should do.
Implications for Polish-US Relations
Diplomatic analysts have highlighted the rarity of such a decisive action by a US embassy towards a senior official in an allied nation, particularly given the historical depth of the partnership between Warsaw and Washington. This relationship, underpinned by significant military cooperation and strategic security dialogues, could face considerable strain if negative rhetoric becomes a prevalent feature within key state institutions.
The future trajectory of this dispute will largely depend on whether the Polish government opts for de-escalation or if the crisis escalates further, potentially moving into the parliamentary arena. Critics of the current situation have underscored the fundamental importance of maintaining open channels for dialogue, even when navigating political divergences between major allied players.
Since Donald Trump assumed the presidency, Poland has found itself in a delicate balancing act. It has sought to uphold its commitments to its European allies while simultaneously avoiding alienating its most powerful partner, the United States, upon which the security of neighbouring Ukraine critically depends.
Historically, Poland has managed this complex dynamic by entrusting Prime Minister Tusk with navigating European Union affairs, while President Andrzej Duda, who gained power with the support of the national-conservative opposition party Law and Justice (PiS), has served as the primary liaison with President Trump.
President Duda has cultivated a cordial relationship with Trump. Trump had previously endorsed Duda during his presidential campaign and extended an invitation to the White House shortly after Duda assumed office. During a joint appearance at the White House in September, President Trump declared his intention to maintain US troop presence in Poland, even suggesting an increase if requested, signalling strong support for the Polish president and his objectives.
Earlier this week, President Duda convened a meeting of a national security body to discuss, among other critical issues, Poland’s potential participation in Trump’s “Board of Peace.” The meeting also aimed to address allegations concerning Mr. Czarzasty’s “eastern business and social contacts,” which the parliament speaker has vehemently denied, refuting any clandestine dealings in Russia or Belarus. The Law and Justice party, the primary opposition and a key supporter of President Duda’s re-election bid, is anticipating a return to power in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
