Socceroos Sensation Mohamed Toure Ignites English Championship: Former Coach Believes Randers May Have Undersold Talent
The Australian football scene is buzzing with excitement following the explosive start of young Socceroos striker Mohamed Toure at English Championship club Norwich City. The 21-year-old has hit the ground running since his move from Danish side Randers this month, netting an impressive five goals in just 130 minutes of play. His latest strike came in Norwich’s solid 3-1 FA Cup fourth-round victory over West Bromwich Albion over the weekend.
Norwich secured Toure’s signature for an initial fee of $5 million, with potential add-ons and bonuses that could see Randers receive an additional $1.35 million. Given Toure’s current form, this transfer fee is already looking like a remarkable bargain. During his tenure at Randers, Toure proved his scoring prowess, notching 12 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions.
Jesper Sorensen, Toure’s former manager at Randers, has openly admitted that the Danish club might have sold the promising forward for less than his true market value. Speaking to Danish outlet Bold, Sorensen reflected on the transfer, stating, “If he had played the whole Autumn as he has started in Norwich, the price would probably have been different. But that wasn’t the case, and that’s why we’re proud of the sale we ended up making. We are, of course, looking forward to both achieving various bonuses and the opportunity to realise the resale clause that exists. Because he has the potential to go really far.”
Sorensen also revealed that a number of European clubs, including Australian outfit Sturm Graz, had been monitoring Toure’s development. He elaborated on the player’s unique talent: “There have always been scouts and clubs who have taken note of his potential. Then there have been matches where he hasn’t shown it, but no one could take those extraordinary things away from him, and you don’t find those skills in many places. In that respect, he is simply unique.”
Toure’s Impact and Future Potential for the Socceroos
Socceroos manager Tony Popovic will undoubtedly be delighted with Toure’s sensational form, especially with the World Cup on the horizon. The young striker’s emergence could provide a significant boost to the national team’s attacking options. Alongside fellow young talent Nestory Irankunda, Toure has the potential to form a formidable partnership in the Socceroos’ forward line. Toure has already represented Australia at the senior international level, scoring two goals in five appearances.

Norwich City manager Philippe Clement has also lauded Toure’s character and adaptability. Clement shared his positive experience working with the young Australian, who was born in a refugee camp in Guinea after his parents fled Liberia during the civil war. “I don’t have the feeling with him that I need to manage him a lot, because he’s really humble. He’s even quite introvert,” Clement commented.
Clement recounted a humorous anecdote from Toure’s early days at Norwich, highlighting his humble nature. After Toure became the first player since Jesse Lingard in 2013 to score a hat-trick on his first start in England’s top four tiers (against Oxford United), Clement revealed a pre-match tradition. “A funny story about the Oxford game, because the day before, all the new players had to sing a song. That’s a tradition,” Clement explained. “I have to say that Mo was not really up to that, and it was not really a big performance. I told him also after the game that I was really happy that this performance on the pitch was much better than in his singing contest! He’s really humble, really down to earth. He’s come from Australia, he’s focused and wants to learn and recognises really well the things he needs to work on. He’s really hungry to become better. I don’t need to manage him.”

Toure’s journey to the English Championship is a testament to his dedication and talent. He relocated to Australia as an infant and began his football career in Adelaide. His potential was first recognised by French club Reims, who spotted him playing for Adelaide United. Reflecting on his rapid ascent, Toure expressed his elation: “It’s a crazy start and hopefully we can keep it going. It’s been one of my dreams for a long time, coming to England to play football and I didn’t expect to be at such a big club so quick. Now I’m here at Norwich and I just want to enjoy every moment.”
