Foran Steps Up: A New Chapter for Manly Amidst Early Season Struggles
The Manly Sea Eagles are embarking on a new era with a familiar face at the helm. Kieran Foran, a celebrated former champion five-eighth for the club, has stepped into the role of interim head coach, tasked with steering the team away from their winless start to the season. The move comes in the wake of Anthony Seibold’s recent sacking, marking a significant and rapid transition for Foran, who only recently retired from playing and was serving as an assistant coach just four months ago.
The 35-year-old guided his first training session at 4 Pines Park on Sunday, a stark contrast to his previous role. The atmosphere within the squad has been described as turbulent, with veteran forward Jake Trbojevic acknowledging that the players share responsibility for the team’s disappointing performance thus far.
Foran, alongside chief executive Jason King, addressed the Sea Eagles squad, laying bare the expectations that come with representing the eight-time premiers. “At the moment we’ve got to find a way to play a full 80 minutes. We’ve got to turn the results,” Foran stated, acknowledging the zero-and-three record, particularly at home, as a significant disappointment. He emphasised the clear message delivered about the club’s expectations and the inherent responsibility of wearing the Sea Eagles jersey.

Rekindling the Manly Ethos
Foran’s own playing career is intertwined with Manly’s last golden era, including their triumphant 2011 Grand Final victory. That team was renowned for its ruthless and aggressive style, an ethos that Foran believes is fundamental to the club’s identity and success. He aims to reignite this spirit as he embarks on his coaching journey.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Foran reported a positive reception from the players. He described them as being in good spirits, “very welcoming and understanding of the situation.” He added, “Obviously, it’s not ideal but … you play the cards you’re dealt. At the end of the day, I feel very well supported by the people around me – the club, the players, and that’ll make my job easier.”
Foran also spoke about his brief tenure under Seibold, expressing gratitude for the learning experience and reaching out to the former coach after his dismissal. “I obviously wanted him to know that he had my support, that I was thinking of him through this difficult time and about how much I enjoyed coming back to Manly and starting my coaching journey under him,” Foran shared.
Immediate Focus and Player Perspective
With limited time before their next match against the Dolphins in Brisbane on Thursday night, Foran indicated that major changes are unlikely. The immediate priority is to secure their first win of the season.
Trbojevic believes Foran will bring a “different voice” to the team and anticipates him being a “great leader.” However, he was candid about the players’ accountability for the team’s current predicament. “We don’t feel great about where we’re at,” Trbojevic admitted. “We’re very disappointed, obviously. Losing any game is horrible so to lose three straight, especially at home, we don’t feel great about it. We want to turn it around as much as everyone.”
Trbojevic lauded Foran’s appointment as a fitting recognition of his standing within the club. “He’s a proud Manly man, so I think he’ll do a great job for us,” he said. “I think it’s exciting. We know how passionate he is for the club. I think it’s going to be great for us and everyone will get behind him.” He also confirmed that Foran had a productive initial chat with the team about his expectations and the path forward.

Foran’s Coaching Philosophy: Authenticity and Influence
Foran’s coaching journey began with the fundamental task of setting up training equipment, a familiar ritual from his time as an assistant. While he acknowledges learning from Seibold and his former playing coaches, particularly Des Hasler, Foran is committed to forging his own coaching identity.
“I certainly enjoyed his style of coaching and there would be a number of things that I take [from Hasler] to implement into my own coaching style, but again staying true to who I am,” Foran explained. “I’m not Anthony Seibold. I’m not Des Hasler. I’m Kieran Foran. I want to make sure I stay true to that.”

The unexpected promotion of Kieran Foran signifies a fresh start for the Manly Sea Eagles. While the path ahead is undoubtedly challenging, the club and its supporters will be looking to their former champion to inspire a turnaround and recapture the winning spirit that has defined their rich history. The focus now shifts to Thursday night’s clash, where the Sea Eagles will aim to break their losing streak under their new interim leader.
