Melbourne Storm Star Undergoes Emergency Surgery for Blood Clot
Melbourne Storm’s powerhouse prop, Tui Kamikamica, is on the road to recovery in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery to remove a blood clot. The incident, believed to be a suspected stroke, occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, sending shockwaves through the rugby league community.
The harrowing ordeal began around 3 am when Kamikamica’s partner, Asi, discovered the Fijian front-rower experiencing a seizure while on his way back from the bathroom. Immediate action was taken, with Asi swiftly contacting emergency services. A rapid response from both an ambulance and a trauma unit saw Kamikamica rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
At the hospital, surgeons acted swiftly to address the critical situation. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Kamikamica’s agent, Jeff Jurotte, confirmed the successful procedure. The surgery involved an approach through the groin to access and remove the blood clot, which was located at the front of the player’s head.
“She got him to hospital and they found that he had a blood clot,” Jurotte explained. “The clot was at the front of the head – they went through the groin and removed it straight away. He’s out of intensive care and back into a ward. They’ve got to keep him there for the next two or three days and assess him.”
The resilience of Kamikamica was evident even in his immediate post-operative state. Upon waking from surgery, he was greeted by Storm teammates Eli Katoa and Young Tonumaipea. Tonumaipea, who also holds a position as a club welfare officer, was present to offer support.
“He woke up and said to Young, ‘I am just annoyed I can’t play this week’,” Jurotte revealed, highlighting Kamikamica’s characteristic dedication to the game.
The concern and support for Kamikamica have extended beyond his immediate teammates and club. Former Storm captain and NRL legend Cameron Smith shared on the program 100% Footy that he had personally reached out to the injured forward.
“[Tui] replied back and said he was feeling much better,” Smith reported. He also relayed positive feedback from Storm football manager Frank Ponissi, who assured Smith that “[Tui] is in great care with all the medical professionals.”
The Melbourne Storm club officially confirmed Kamikamica’s condition and the ongoing care he is receiving. In a statement, the club assured the public that Kamikamica is under the best possible care, receiving dedicated support from the hospital’s specialist medical team, working in close collaboration with the club’s own medical staff. This coordinated approach ensures that all aspects of Kamikamica’s recovery are meticulously managed.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of health, even for elite athletes. The rugby league world will undoubtedly be rallying behind Tui Kamikamica as he navigates his recovery, with hopes for a full and swift return to the field once he is medically cleared. His strong character and the unwavering support from his club and teammates are significant assets during this challenging time. The focus now remains on his well-being and ensuring he has all the necessary resources for a complete rehabilitation.
