Pygmy Hippo Star Moo Deng’s Enclosure Breached by Intruder
A man has been apprehended by authorities after he was discovered climbing into the enclosure of Moo Deng, the incredibly popular pygmy hippo who has captured the hearts of social media users worldwide. The incident occurred at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, a place that has become a major tourist attraction thanks to the pint-sized celebrity.
The alleged trespasser, a Thai national, reportedly entered the protected area on Tuesday. According to Narongwit Chodchoy, the director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, the breach happened when a zookeeper was temporarily absent, and there were no other visitors in the immediate vicinity.

Security footage that has since gone viral online clearly depicts the man. He was seen approaching Moo Deng and her mother, Jona, while holding a tablet, seemingly engrossed in recording or photographing the animals. The man was dressed in a black beanie, sunglasses, a green tank top, and brown shorts.
Director Narongwit stated that the individual remained inside the enclosure for approximately one to two minutes before zoo staff became aware of his presence. Crucially, the man did not attempt to escape when zoo personnel alerted the police.
Moo Deng: A Social Media Phenomenon
Moo Deng, whose name translates to ‘bouncy pork’ in Thai (a reference to a popular meatball dish), became an internet sensation shortly after her birth in July 2024. Her meteoric rise to fame is largely attributed to a dedicated zookeeper who began sharing an abundance of adorable pictures and videos of the baby hippo on social media platforms.
The captivating imagery of Moo Deng, with her miniature frame and endearing, podgy proportions, quickly inspired a fervent following. Her charm has drawn significant crowds, not only from within Thailand but also from international visitors eager to catch a glimpse of her in person and capture their own photos and videos.
Legal Ramifications and Zoo’s Response
In the wake of the incident, police have initially charged the man with trespassing. However, the investigation is ongoing, and Director Narongwit has confirmed the zoo’s intention to pursue all available legal avenues against the suspect. The identity of the man has not been publicly disclosed by the police.
The man has since been released on bail. Fortunately, Moo Deng and Jona were unharmed during the encounter, as the intruder made no attempt to touch them.

In a formal statement released on Tuesday via the zoo’s official Facebook page, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo confirmed that both Moo Deng and Jona appeared to be slightly startled by the unexpected intrusion. A veterinarian has been monitoring their condition closely to ensure their well-being.
The zoo took the opportunity to strongly urge all visitors to adhere strictly to the established rules and follow the guidance provided by zoo staff. This directive is paramount for the safety of both the visitors themselves and the diverse wildlife housed within the expansive grounds.
Khao Kheow Open Zoo: A Thriving Wildlife Sanctuary
The Khao Kheow Open Zoo is a substantial wildlife park located approximately 60 miles southeast of Bangkok. Spanning nearly 2,000 acres, it is home to an impressive array of over 2,000 animals. Moo Deng’s immense popularity has had a tangible impact on visitor numbers, reportedly doubling the attendance at the zoo.
Moo Deng’s fame has transcended the zoo itself, with even the Royal Thai Embassy featuring the baby hippo on its social media channels. Her image has inspired a wave of fan-created artwork and cakes, and one prominent cosmetics chain even advised its customers to “wear your blush like a baby hippo,” highlighting her widespread cultural influence. The initial spark for Moo Deng’s global recognition ignited when zookeepers began posting her videos on their TikTok account, which boasts millions of followers.
