Former USAID Official Details Alleged Devastation Following Elon Musk’s Actions
A former high-ranking official within the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has come forward with serious allegations concerning the alleged catastrophic consequences of Elon Musk’s involvement in dismantling the organisation responsible for global humanitarian aid. Nicholas Enrich, who held the position of top global health official at USAID, claims that “hundreds of thousands” of individuals, a significant portion of whom were children, suffered or even perished as a direct result of actions taken during the Trump administration, reportedly influenced by Musk.
Enrich’s stark accusations emerged in a recent interview, where he described his personal experience witnessing the agency’s downfall. “Musk tweeted that he just spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper, and I was the top global health official at USAID at the time,” Enrich recounted, speaking to Current Affairs. He elaborated, “So, I unfortunately had a front row seat to the destruction that was happening to the agency at that point.”
Understanding USAID’s Crucial Role
To contextualise his claims, Enrich explained the fundamental purpose of USAID. He described it as “the federal government’s branch to deliver foreign aid and international development assistance around the world to over 100 countries.” He further emphasised its importance, stating, “It was an implement of national security. It kept Americans safe from infectious diseases.” This highlights the agency’s multifaceted role, extending beyond mere charitable giving to encompass strategic national interests and public health protection on a global scale.
Musk and Associates Criticised for Lack of Understanding and Ideological Influence
Enrich posited that the individuals he referred to as “the DOGE folks and the political appointees that came into the agency” fundamentally misunderstood USAID’s mission and operations. Instead of relying on accurate information, he alleged they were swayed by “right-wing conspiracy theories.” This lack of informed understanding, coupled with ideological motivations, appears to be a central theme in Enrich’s critique.
Writer Nathan Robinson, in his commentary on the situation, did not shy away from using strong language to describe Musk’s alleged actions. Robinson admitted to feeling compelled to “resort to extreme adjectives like ‘evil’ and ‘depraved’” when discussing Musk. He characterised Musk as “someone who, with his own personal fortune, could save millions of lives and chooses not to.”
Robinson’s criticism intensified, stating, “But not only chooses not to, but personally goes into the government agency that, for a very small amount of money, saves those lives and decides that no, those people are going to die. I really, kind of run out of words.” This powerful indictment suggests a perception of deliberate cruelty and a wilful disregard for human life.
Allegations of Deceptive Practices and Cuts to Aid for Vulnerable Children
Enrich also expressed his profound frustration at what he described as Musk’s deceptive public statements. “It’s one thing if he’s going to commit to celebrating cutting off aid for the world’s poorest children; it’s another to then stand in the White House and speak publicly about how he’s actually restored access to HIV and Ebola prevention activities,” Enrich stated. He pointed out the stark contradiction, adding, “on the same day that his tech bros are sitting in our office at USAID and terminating the contracts that would be needed to provide those services.”
This account suggests a deliberate strategy of public relations spin that masked the reality of aid termination. Enrich acknowledged that during the period when the Trump administration froze foreign aid, there were assurances that USAID would continue all “life-saving activities.” However, he claims this was not the case.

Instead, he attributed the decisions to individuals he described as “uninformed and unqualified sycophants who knew nothing about the agency.” The ultimate motivation, according to Enrich, was “specifically to satisfy the ego of the world’s richest man.” This accusation paints a picture of foreign policy and humanitarian aid being dictated by personal vanity rather than national interest or ethical considerations.
