Queen Mary of Denmark has experienced a profound heartbreak following the passing of her father, John Donaldson, at the age of 84. The Danish Royal House shared the news with great sadness, but it was Queen Mary’s own heartfelt words that truly conveyed the depth of her grief. “My heart is heavy and my thoughts are grey,” she said. “My beloved father is dead.”
Just weeks before this tragic loss, Queen Mary and King Frederik X of Denmark made a significant state visit to Australia. While the official itinerary included various engagements, royal insiders revealed there was a deeply personal reason behind the trip. For Queen Mary, 54, and King Frederik, 57, the visit carried emotional weight, especially as it concluded in Hobart, her hometown.
Sources close to the royal family told Woman’s Day that the final stop of the tour was particularly meaningful for Queen Mary. Her father, John Donaldson, was facing serious health challenges at the time, and she insisted on ending the tour in Hobart so she could stay and spend more time with him. “At 84, John hasn’t been able to travel for some time – he was devastated to miss her coronation [in January 2024] – but for Mary, every visit carries more weight as his decline is more visible to her than her siblings who see him all the time,” a source explained.
After completing their official duties, Queen Mary remained quietly in Tasmania. During those final days, she shared what the palace later described as “several good and present moments” with her father. These moments now hold even greater significance in light of his passing.
A photo taken by Queen Mary herself during that visit has since been released alongside the announcement of John’s death. Friends have noted that Queen Mary shared an especially close bond with her father, making the loss even more devastating. As the youngest of four children, she maintained a deep connection to her Australian roots and to the man who played a pivotal role in shaping her life before she became a member of the Danish royal family.
In her statement, Queen Mary acknowledged the long road of grief ahead, but also expressed the enduring love she feels for her father. She suggested that when the sadness fades, it will be replaced by cherished memories and gratitude for everything he gave her.
