MG Unveils the All-Electric MG4X SUV with Groundbreaking Battery Tech
MG is set to electrify the Australian market further with the upcoming release of its pure-electric MG4X compact SUV. Official images and preliminary specifications have surfaced, showcasing a vehicle built on the same advanced ‘Modular Scalable Platform’ and featuring the ‘E3’ electronic architecture as its popular MG4 hatchback sibling. This new SUV shares the impressive 2750mm wheelbase of the MG4 but adopts a distinct crossover-style design that promises to offer increased dimensions in length, width, and height.
Innovative Battery Technology at its Core
A significant highlight of the MG4X is its pioneering battery system, which MG is touting as the “world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” unit. This cutting-edge technology was initially revealed at last year’s Chengdu Auto Show. The battery in question is a 53.95kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion pack. In the MG4 hatchback, this battery configuration delivers a remarkable claimed range of 530km, according to the more lenient CLTC testing protocol. Furthermore, the charging capabilities are equally impressive, with a claimed 30-80 per cent charge time of just 21 minutes, a crucial factor for electric vehicle adoption.
Design Evolution: From Hatch to SUV
While the MG4X shares a general visual kinship with the MG4 hatchback, it introduces a unique front fascia. This includes a redesigned headlight arrangement, a striking full-width daytime running light strip, and a broad, two-tier grille positioned below the bumper. The SUV’s profile is characterized by a generous glasshouse that flows into smoothly sculpted flanks. A rear roof spoiler elegantly crowns a tailgate featuring a pronounced central deck section, further differentiating it from the hatchback.
A Glimpse Inside: The ‘Smart Cockpit’ Experience
Although interior images have not yet been released, it is highly anticipated that the MG4X will incorporate a version of the MG4’s sophisticated ‘smart cockpit’. This advanced interior environment has been co-developed with global smart device specialist Oppo, promising a seamless and intuitive user experience.

In the MG4 hatchback, this translates to a digital instrument cluster elegantly paired with a central multimedia screen that can expand up to a substantial 15.6-inch display. This entire system is powered by a high-performance Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, ensuring smooth operation and responsiveness. The integration of a ‘Hand-Car Interconnection’ system is designed to facilitate a fluid, lag-free connection between smartphones and the vehicle. Advanced driving assistance features such as high-speed ‘Navigate on Pilot’ and automated parking functions are also expected to be onboard, enhancing both convenience and safety.
Pricing and Market Positioning in Australia
While definitive domestic pricing for the MG4X is yet to be confirmed, insights from its sibling offer a potential benchmark. The Anxin Edition of the new MG4 hatch, featuring the semi-solid-state battery, is priced at ¥102,800 in its home market, which converts to approximately A$20,818 based on current exchange rates.

However, it is important to factor in additional costs for the Australian market. These would include import duties, distribution expenses, and potentially enhanced standard specifications tailored for local consumers. Consequently, a more realistic pre-on-road price point for the MG4X in Australia is likely to fall within the mid-$30,000 bracket.
This pricing strategy would position the MG4X competitively against other emerging electric and hybrid vehicles in the Australian market. It would sit below the MG ZS EV (which starts from $40,490 drive-away), aligning more closely with the BYD Atto 3 (from $31,990 before on-road costs), the Chery E5 (from $36,990 BOC), and the recently launched Leapmotor C10 (from $38,990 drive-away).
MG Motor Australia has been approached for comment regarding the MG4X’s potential for local sale. Given that the second-generation MG4 hatchback, known locally as the MG4 Urban, is slated for release in Australia within the next few months, it is highly probable that the MG4X will follow suit, arriving in local showrooms before the end of the year. This would mark a significant expansion of MG’s electric vehicle offerings in Australia, catering to a growing demand for stylish, technologically advanced, and competitively priced SUVs.
