Background on Rueben Bain’s Car Crash
Rueben Bain, a standout player from Miami who is expected to be selected early in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, was involved in a fatal car crash that occurred in March 2024. The incident has raised questions about how it may affect his draft prospects. According to reports, NFL teams are aware of the event, and many believe the matter is already closed. However, it remains uncertain whether this accident will influence Bain’s standing in the upcoming draft.
Details of the Car Crash
On March 17, 2024, Bain, who was a sophomore at the time with the Hurricanes, was driving a 2021 Land Rover on Interstate 95 in Miami at 4 a.m. ET. According to Ollie Connolly of The Read Optional, Bain’s vehicle — registered under the corporation Miami Sports 27 — struck another car before colliding with concrete barriers on the side of the highway.
One passenger in Bain’s vehicle, 22-year-old Destiny Betts, suffered serious injuries and was knocked unconscious. She never regained consciousness and passed away on June 13, 2024, due to her injuries.
Betts’ family released a statement regarding the incident, expressing their commitment to honoring her memory while also requesting privacy. They emphasized that they do not seek public attention around the tragedy and wished Bain well in his future endeavors.
A second passenger was also injured in the crash. Initially, Bain was cited for careless driving, but the charge was later dropped several months before Betts’ death.
Team Awareness and Legal Developments
Multiple reports suggest that NFL teams have been aware of Bain’s involvement in the crash for some time. Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports noted that most teams were satisfied with Bain’s explanation regarding the incident. Albert Breer reported that a lawsuit related to the accident was settled in Miami.
Trey Wallace of OutKick reported that Bain was cited again in October 2025 for careless driving while operating a Tesla Cybertruck. According to Wallace, the police report indicated that Bain was involved in an accident. However, the case was dismissed in February 2026.
Police Report on the Incident
According to police crash records, Bain’s vehicle was traveling northbound outside of the center lane on I-95 in Miami when it collided with a vehicle in the center lane. This collision caused Bain’s vehicle to hit a concrete wall, destroying the right side of the car. The vehicle then veered into the wall again, damaging the left front of the frame.
Airbags were deployed during the incident, and Bain was described as “apparently normal” at the time of the crash, according to police reports. No field sobriety test was administered to Bain, as noted by Connolly.
