Salah’s Resilience Shines as Liverpool Dominates Galatasaray, Sets Sights on PSG
Liverpool’s Champions League campaign received a significant boost with a commanding 4-0 victory over Galatasaray, a performance that saw Mohamed Salah demonstrate remarkable mental fortitude. Despite a missed penalty just before halftime, the Egyptian star rebounded with an electrifying second-half display, contributing a crucial assist and a signature goal to help overturn a first-leg deficit.
The Anfield faithful witnessed a true test of character from their veteran forward. After Dominik Szoboszlai had put Liverpool ahead, Salah stepped up to take a penalty, only to see his effort saved by Galatasaray’s Ugurcan Cakir. This moment, occurring moments before the half-time whistle, could have easily derailed the team’s momentum. However, manager Arne Slot lauded Salah’s ability to bounce back.
“It says a lot about him that after you miss a penalty just before half-time as that can sometimes be hard for an individual or for a team,” Slot commented. “We have had a lot of setbacks this season, a lot of first halves or second halves where we have created chance after chance after chance without doing justice to how we have performed – so not scoring.”

Slot continued to praise Salah’s contribution in the second half. “And then Mo and the team came out in the second half the way they did; he assisted Hugo, a great assist, and then scored a trademark goal that he has scored so many times in this stadium and for this club, cutting inside, finding the corner. So that tells you a lot about his mental strength but definitely also of the team, because adversity is something we can definitely talk about in this season.”
Salah’s influence was undeniable. Following his penalty miss, he provided a superb assist for Hugo Ekitike’s goal, setting up the rebound for Ryan Gravenberch to tap home. He then etched his name in the history books by scoring his 50th Champions League goal, a trademark left-footed curler from the right flank, becoming the first African player to reach this milestone. His personal expected goals (xG) for the match stood at an impressive 2.42, contributing significantly to the team’s overall xG of 5.02.
Despite his stellar performance, Salah was substituted late in the game due to a knock, adding a note of caution for the upcoming fixtures. “Injury-wise he came off not because he had scored enough but because he felt something so let’s see where he is for the weekend and afterwards,” Slot stated.
Quarter-Final Showdown Awaits Against Champions Paris Saint-Germain
The emphatic victory not only secured Liverpool’s progression but also set up a highly anticipated quarter-final clash against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. The French giants previously eliminated Liverpool from the competition on penalties last season, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming tie.
“When you get to the latter stages you know one thing for sure is that you will play PSG,” Slot acknowledged. “They are an incredible team. We experienced that last season when we faced them away from home, very difficult, here at Anfield we played a fantastic game. The best game I have managed in my career in terms of how it was played, both teams wanting to entertain the fans.”
Slot emphasised the importance of maintaining the high standards set in this dominant performance as the season progresses. He highlighted the remarkable statistical anomaly of the match, noting, “We have to try to find consistency – although I can already spoil or disappoint people as this performance is impossible to copy one more time because (it was) 5.02 xG on a Champions League night, conceding 0.18 xG.”
Galatasaray’s Night Marred by Injuries
For Galatasaray, the night was one to forget, compounded by significant injury setbacks. The Turkish side struggled to contain Liverpool’s attacking prowess and suffered a double blow with key players forced off the pitch. Striker Victor Osimhen had to be substituted at halftime due to an arm injury, and Noa Lang was stretchered off the field following a severe finger injury sustained after a collision with the advertising boards.
Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk confirmed the severity of the injuries. “He is going to the hospital because of the important issue he has with his finger,” Buruk said. “If there is an operation, they will do it here. Victor Osimhen, his arm is hurting and he wanted to get out of the game at half-time and he is at the hospital.” The double injury blow further hampered any hopes Galatasaray had of mounting a comeback in the tie.
