Aitken and Bamber Secure Landmark Victory for Cadillac in Detroit
After a series of nail-biting finishes that saw them consistently on the podium but just shy of the top step, Jack Aitken and Earl Bamber have finally broken through for a dominant victory in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The dynamic duo piloting the #31 Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R delivered a commanding performance on the challenging temporary street circuit in Detroit, marking a significant milestone for the team and for General Motors on its home turf.
The 2026 IMSA season had, until this point, been a story of near misses for Aitken and Bamber. The #31 Cadillac had featured in the top three in all four preceding rounds, including a particularly hard-fought second-place finish at the iconic Rolex 24 At Daytona, where Aitken engaged in a thrilling duel with Felipe Nasr of Porsche Penske Motorsport. However, the Detroit Grand Prix proved to be a different narrative entirely.
From the moment the team arrived in Detroit, the #31 Cadillac was the car to beat. The temporary nine-turn, 1.645-mile circuit, located in the heart of the Motor City, proved to be the perfect stage for Cadillac to showcase its prowess. The team absolutely dominated proceedings, topping every practice session, securing pole position, and ultimately leading an impressive 73 out of the 82 laps en route to a resounding victory.
“I think it’s a win that we’ve been searching for a while,” expressed a jubilant Jack Aitken following the race. “Since this program started, with Detroit being home for GM, Cadillac, so many of the people on the program. It was very meaningful and we’ve come close with podiums, but yeah, to get the win.”

A Hometown Triumph for GM
The significance of this victory was amplified by the fact that it was a true homecoming celebration for General Motors. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, the #3 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports entry, driven by Antonio Garcia and Alexander Sims, also clinched a hard-fought win in the GTD Pro class. This dual success underscored a triumphant weekend for GM brands on their home soil.
Earl Bamber, who qualified the #31 Cadillac on pole and started the race, highlighted the team’s collective effort. “Jack just did a faultless drive to the end, although it was pretty nervous with those yellows watching,” he commented during the post-race press conference. “It was a long hour to watch, a lot of pacing going on, but yeah, just really happy for Cadillac, and really happy for the Corvette guys also to finally get the win here at our home race.”
Aitken echoed his teammate’s sentiments, emphasizing the overwhelming feeling of shared success. “And like Earl said, on the same day that the Corvettes managed to do the same, it’s pretty overwhelming, but amazing,” Aitken said. “Very grateful to have the team around me that I do from Earl, who was just incredible with his pace this weekend and from his pole position to handing me the car in the race in the lead. Made my life very easy, which is nice. But the car was very impressive as well. You know, we had a very good car from the get go. The Whelen Cadillac guys really, really nailed it and like I said, just feeling very grateful right now.”
Aitken Takes Championship Lead
With this breakthrough victory, Aitken has now moved into the sole lead of the championship standings. Having competed in all five races this season, with either Bamber or Frederik Vesti sharing driving duties, Aitken has accumulated an impressive 1,760 points. He holds a comfortable 144-point advantage over his nearest competitor, Laurin Heinrich. Heinrich, who participated in the endurance rounds with Porsche Penske Motorsport before transitioning to sprint races with JDC-Miller MotorSports, secured a win at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca last month, but Aitken’s consistent strong performances have propelled him to the top.
The Detroit race was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Whelen Cadillac team. After a series of frustratingly close calls, their persistence has paid off with a victory that will be remembered as a pivotal moment in their 2026 campaign. The dominant performance not only signifies a return to winning ways but also sends a clear message to the rest of the field about their championship aspirations.
