AJ Brown Lands in New England: Patriots Secure Star Receiver in Major Offseason Trade
The New England Patriots have officially landed one of the NFL’s premier wide receivers, A.J. Brown, in a significant offseason move. The three-time Pro Bowl selection is heading to Foxborough in a deal that sees the Philadelphia Eagles receive a 2028 first-round draft pick and a 2027 fifth-round selection. This trade, long speculated within NFL circles, was reportedly confirmed by sources close to the league’s transaction details.
The timing of the trade was strategically managed to navigate the intricacies of the NFL salary cap. By executing the deal after the conclusion of May, the Eagles are able to spread a substantial $43.5 million in dead cap money across the 2026 and 2027 seasons. This financial manoeuvre provides the Eagles with much-needed flexibility as they look to reshape their roster.
Brown’s arrival in New England is seen as a direct replacement for Stefon Diggs, who was a pivotal figure for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in the 2025 season. Diggs was subsequently released by the team following their Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
The 28-year-old product of Ole Miss, who hoisted a Super Bowl trophy with the Eagles in 2024, experienced a notable dip in his statistical production last season. While Brown consistently averaged over 80 receiving yards per game during his first three seasons in Philadelphia (2022-2024), his output last season fell to 66.9 yards per contest. Reports suggest that Brown and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts occasionally struggled to find a consistent rhythm on the field during the 2025 campaign. Adding a curious footnote to the situation, Hurts was notably absent from Brown’s recent wedding to Kelsey Riley.

Brown’s NFL journey began with the Tennessee Titans, where he emerged as a burgeoning star under the tutelage of current Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. During his initial three years in Nashville, Brown averaged an impressive 69.7 receiving yards per game before being traded to the Eagles in exchange for the 18th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
His move to New England places him in a competitive receiving corps. The Patriots’ wide receiver room already boasts a promising group including Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, and Kyle Williams. Furthermore, the Patriots recently bolstered their receiving options by signing free agent Romeo Doubs, a former star with the Green Bay Packers. Doubs, still only 26, is coming off a productive 2025 season where he amassed 724 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles have been actively preparing for Brown’s departure for some time, making proactive moves to address their receiving needs.
Eagles Rebuild Receiver Room Post-Brown Trade
In anticipation of Brown’s exit, the Eagles made significant additions to their wide receiver unit. Their strategic planning became evident during the April NFL Draft, where they selected USC’s highly touted wideout Makai Lemon in the first round. Beyond the draft, the team also secured the services of Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore through free agency. Additionally, they orchestrated a trade to acquire Dontayvion Wicks from the Green Bay Packers.
These new acquisitions will join an already formidable receiving threat in DeVonta Smith. The former Heisman Trophy winner remains one of the most dynamic and dangerous pass-catching options in the NFC, and he will undoubtedly be a key figure for the Eagles as they navigate the post-Brown era. The Eagles’ proactive approach suggests a clear vision for their offensive future, aiming to maintain a high level of production despite the significant loss of their star receiver.
