Tragic Fall Claims Passenger’s Life at Congonhas Airport
A devastating incident has occurred at Congonhas Airport, one of São Paulo’s busiest aviation hubs, where a 72-year-old passenger tragically lost her life following a fall down the aircraft stairs. The unnamed woman was disembarking from a Latam flight, LA3785, which had arrived from Ribeirão Preto, a city in the northeastern part of the state.
The accident is understood to have taken place shortly after the plane landed. Emergency services were immediately on hand to provide assistance at the scene before the woman was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Sadly, she passed away yesterday, just after midday, at the private Alemao Osvaldo Cruz Hospital in São Paulo, two days after the initial fall. Reports from local media indicate that the passenger had suffered a skull bleed as a result of the incident.
Latam Airlines Brasil issued a statement acknowledging the event. The airline confirmed that on Friday, a passenger experienced a fall while descending the stairs during the disembarkation process for flight LA 3785.
- The passenger received immediate assistance from an ambulance.
- She was subsequently taken to a local hospital for medical attention.
- A company employee accompanied her to the hospital and remained present until her family arrived.
The airline expressed its profound regret over the passenger’s death and conveyed its deepest condolences to her grieving family. Latam also underscored its adherence to all established protocols for such situations, asserting that it implements rigorous safety measures, both technically and operationally, to guarantee the safety of all passengers during their journeys.

Congonhas Airport holds a significant place in São Paulo’s aviation history. Until 1985, it served as the city’s primary airport, handling not only domestic flights but also international services to neighbouring South American countries such as Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile. The opening of Guarulhos Airport in 1985 led to the cessation of international operations at Congonhas. However, it continues to be a vital gateway for regional and short-haul domestic flights, maintaining its importance to the bustling metropolis of São Paulo. The airport’s strategic location and continued operation for domestic routes ensure its ongoing relevance within Brazil’s air travel network. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with air travel, even during the seemingly routine process of disembarkation. Investigations into the precise circumstances surrounding the fall are likely to be ongoing, with a focus on ensuring such a tragedy is not repeated.
