New Captain at the Helm: Molineux Takes the Reins as Gardner Backs the Decision
The Australian women’s cricket team is set to embark on a new chapter with Sophie Molineux appointed as the new captain. While all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner, who was considered a strong contender for the role, admitted to initial disappointment, she has publicly thrown her full support behind Molineux, praising her leadership qualities and ability to inspire her teammates.
The captaincy became vacant following the retirement of long-serving skipper Alyssa Healy last month. Gardner, who had previously served as vice-captain, was widely tipped to be the front-runner. Another prominent figure in contention was Tahlia McGrath, who had deputised for Healy on numerous occasions. However, a recent dip in McGrath’s form appears to have influenced the selectors’ decision.
Ultimately, Molineux emerged as the preferred choice after all three candidates interviewed for the position and presented their strategic visions for the team’s future.

Gardner candidly shared her feelings about not securing the captaincy. “There was probably a period of time where I was disappointed,” she told AAP. “I was asked, ‘Do you want the opportunity to go through the interview?’ And I was like, ‘Of course.’ A lot of it was about what type of vision did I have for the team. For me, it was around just taking ownership and being a real driver for yourself. But you have this defence mechanism the whole time where you don’t want to get too caught up in it anyway. Naturally, you’re still going to be disappointed by it. But I knew that there were obviously reasons why. And I think Soph is going to be amazing.”
Molineux is slated to make her captaincy debut in the upcoming T20 match against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday night. She will then assume the captaincy on a full-time basis during the tour of the West Indies next month.
This appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the Australian team. Following successive semi-final exits in both the T20 and ODI World Cups, the team has gone without a major global trophy for the first time since 2017. Molineux’s proven success in the T20 format, including captaining the Melbourne Renegades to a Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) title, was a significant factor in her selection for the role, especially with a T20 World Cup on the horizon in June.
In a move mirroring the shared vice-captaincy role in the men’s team with Travis Head and Steve Smith, Gardner has now been appointed as one of the vice-captains, alongside Tahlia McGrath. This arrangement ensures that one of the all-rounders will be ready to step in and lead at various stages, particularly as Molineux continues to manage a persistent knee issue that has hampered her availability over the past three years.
Gardner expressed her eagerness to collaborate with the new skipper. “Now it’s about how Soph kind of wants to run the team and then how can we complement her with our strengths?” she stated. “I’ll seek feedback (on the captaincy interview) if I want it, but not necessarily on why I didn’t get it. It’s more so how I can have an impact on the group in a different space. I’m excited to see where Soph takes this side. I know how excited she is and her great qualities that she’s going to bring to this team.”
Gardner highlighted Molineux’s key attributes as a leader. “She can bring people together, which is an amazing quality of hers. She brings a lot of fun to the group and a lot of energy. So I’m sure a lot of it was around that. She always puts people first and then talks about them as cricketers. Everyone’s going to love her being the leader of this team going forward.”
Key Aspects of Molineux’s Captaincy Appointment:

- Gardner’s Support: Despite not being selected for the top job, Ashleigh Gardner has expressed strong backing for Molineux.
