Kano Governor Set to Defect to Ruling Party, Signaling Major Political Shift
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf is reportedly poised to switch allegiance from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday. This significant political maneuver, confirmed by a member of the state executive council, marks a pivotal moment for the state’s political landscape.
The NNPP leadership in Kano is reportedly abuzz with anticipation for the governor’s arrival, following what are described as extensive consultations with both the electorate and key stakeholders across the state. The initial plan for this defection was reportedly set for January 5th, but it was postponed to allow for more comprehensive discussions and to secure the commitment of a wider group of stakeholders, notably members of the Kano National Assembly delegation.
A commissioner from the state government, speaking anonymously, emphatically stated, “Yes, of course, the governor is joining APC tomorrow (Monday) with all his NNPP supporters.” This declaration underscores the planned mass migration of political figures from the NNPP to the APC.
Adding to the significance of the impending move, the immediate past governor of Kano State and former National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, returned to Nigeria from Dubai on Sunday. His presence is expected to be a crucial part of the welcoming ceremony for Governor Yusuf. Ganduje, along with the State Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Abbas, had extended a formal invitation to Governor Yusuf on behalf of the party’s influential bloc in Kano. They reportedly assured the governor of their full support and cooperation.
Governor Yusuf’s decision to leave the NNPP, the party under which he was elected, and join the ruling APC is reportedly driven by a desire to enhance his development initiatives within Kano State. This move suggests a strategic realignment aimed at leveraging the resources and influence of the federal ruling party to further his governance agenda.
However, this impending defection is not without its internal friction. The factional leader of the NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has expressed strong opposition to the governor’s intended move. Kwankwaso has insisted that if Governor Yusuf is determined to defect, he should first resign from his gubernatorial position. This stance has created a rift within the NNPP and the broader Kwankwasiyya Movement, highlighting the personal and political stakes involved in this high-profile party switch.
Sources indicate that Governor Yusuf plans to bring a substantial contingent with him to the APC. This group is expected to include all chairmen of local government councils and all members of the NNPP in the state’s House of Assembly. This planned exodus suggests a significant weakening of the NNPP’s base in Kano.
Furthermore, it is understood that Governor Yusuf perceives greater security and stability within the APC. This sentiment is attributed to unresolved leadership challenges and ongoing legal cases within the NNPP, which he reportedly fears could jeopardize his electoral mandate. The allure of a more stable political environment within the APC appears to be a significant factor in his decision.
The political landscape of Kano State is thus on the cusp of a major transformation, with Governor Yusuf’s anticipated switch to the APC poised to reshape alliances and power dynamics within the region and potentially beyond. The coming days will reveal the full extent of this political realignment and its implications for the future of Kano State.
