Luka Doncic’s Injury and Legal Struggles
Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has been ruled out for the rest of the regular season after suffering a Grade 2 hamstring strain. The injury occurred during the Lakers’ 139-96 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday evening, when Doncic pulled up during a drive in the third quarter. This setback is a major blow for the team, as Doncic has been performing at an exceptional level this season.
Doncic, who is 27 years old, has averaged a league-high 33.5 points across 64 games this season, along with 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game. If he does not return for the remainder of the season, it could mean that he will miss out on eligibility for postseason awards such as MVP and all-NBA honors.
Doncic’s agent, Bill Duffy, made a statement via Shams Charania, highlighting the significance of Doncic’s performance this season. He said:
“This season, Luka Dončić has performed at a historic level, leading the league in scoring, carrying the Lakers to third place in the Western Conference and placing himself in the middle of one of the most tightly contested MVP races in memory. To ensure that Luka’s incredible accomplishments this season are rightly honored and he can be considered for the league’s end-of-season awards, we intend to apply for an ‘Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge’ to the 65-game rule.”

Duffy also mentioned that Doncic missed two games this season for the birth of his second child in Slovenia. His daughter was born on December 4 on another continent, yet Doncic returned to the United States to compete with his team on December 6. He has gone to great lengths to show up for his team and this league this season.
Despite last night’s unfortunate injury and other extraordinary circumstances, Doncic’s record-breaking season deserves to be noted in the history books. The agent added that they look forward to working with the NBAPA and the league office to ensure a fair outcome in this matter.
Personal Challenges Off the Court
The injury blow comes amid a difficult time for Doncic off the court. Recently, he accused his ex-fiancée of filing for child support for their two children in the wrong state to receive better payments. Doncic and his former fiancée, Anamaria Goltes, have been involved in a battle over their children as they go through an ugly separation.
According to court documents, the 27-year-old Doncic filed a motion to dismiss Goltes’ petition for child support, which was submitted in Los Angeles. He is moving for the petition to be declared invalid on the grounds that Goltes and their daughters—Gabriela, 2, and Olivia, 3 months—are not California residents.
Moreover, the Lakers star says he filed a family law action in their home nation of Slovenia last month. Doncic accuses Goltes of knowing about this case in Slovenia but choosing to file in California to “avail herself of the generous amounts of child support for which California is well-known.”

A spokesperson for Doncic stated in a statement to People Magazine: “Luka has always provided for anything his daughters could need or want and will continue to do so. He will always fight to be with his daughters and give them the best life possible. Luka is seeking dismissal of this case simply because Slovenia, not California, is the appropriate forum for adjudication of this dispute.”
A Tough Decision
Last month, Doncic revealed he “recently made the tough decision to end my engagement” with Goltes just months after the birth of his second child. He told ESPN:
“I love my daughters more than anything and I’ve been doing everything I can for them to be with me in the US during the season. But that hasn’t been possible, so I recently made the tough decision to end my engagement. Everything I do is for my daughters’ happiness and I will always fight to be with them and give them the best life I can.”
Doncic proposed to Goltes in July of 2023 near Bled Castle in Slovenia. The two met when they were children.
