Royal Yacht Tour Kicks Off Amidst Political Storm in Denmark
King Frederik and Queen Mary have commenced their traditional summer tour of Denmark aboard the royal yacht, the Dannebrog. This annual journey, usually a highlight of the royal calendar, is now unfolding against a backdrop of significant political developments in Copenhagen, casting a shadow over the otherwise anticipated and busy itinerary.
The nation’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has successfully navigated a period of political uncertainty to form a new government. Her previous three-party coalition faced a substantial defeat in the general election held in March, necessitating a period of intense negotiations to secure a new mandate.
Prime Minister Secures Third Term, Impacting Royal Schedule
Mette Frederiksen is set to return as Denmark’s Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, having agreed to form a centre-left coalition government. This political development, while a significant achievement for Frederiksen, has inevitably disrupted the King and Queen’s carefully planned summer tour.
Speaking to reporters in Odense, a city west of Copenhagen, Frederiksen announced, “I have been to see His Majesty the King and announced that a government can be formed after long negotiations.” The Prime Minister was present on the royal yacht Dannebrog on Monday, the very first day of the royal couple’s sailing program, as it was docked in the port. As the leader of the Social Democrats, Frederiksen ultimately garnered the necessary support from parliamentary parties to establish her new administration.
Reflecting on the composition of her government, Frederiksen stated, “It is a government platform for the people who are in Denmark and for the generations to come and also for the animals.” This remark highlights the growing importance of animal welfare, which emerged as a prominent issue during the recent election campaign.
A Royal Welcome in Odense
Frederiksen was among the distinguished guests at a reception hosted by King Frederik and Queen Mary on Monday evening, following a demanding day for the royal couple in Odense. This historic city is famously known as the birthplace of the beloved Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen.
Earlier in the day, Queen Mary showcased her sartorial elegance, gracing the occasion with a new straw hat by Danish milliner Katrin Cecilia Jacobsen, complemented by exquisite jewels from Dulong. Her skirt, a re-wear from the Parisian brand Paul & Joe, and a jacket by Ralph Lauren, were pieces she had recently sported in Hobart during the concluding day of her and King Frederik’s state visit.

Upon their arrival in the popular coastal town, Queen Mary received a touching presentation: a sleeve of old photographs depicting a young King Frederik aboard the royal yacht during his childhood. In a heartwarming moment, she promptly called her husband over to share in the nostalgic discovery.
The Royal Yacht Dannebrog: A Floating Residence and Royal Tradition
The royal tour is scheduled to continue its northward trajectory from Odense, with the next stop in Grenaa on Tuesday, culminating in Holbæk on Thursday. However, King Frederik is slated to return to Copenhagen on Wednesday to fulfil his constitutional duties as monarch. The 58-year-old King will preside over the official reception of the new government at Amalienborg Palace before rejoining Queen Mary on board the Dannebrog.
This annual summer tour aboard the Dannebrog, visiting various towns and cities across Denmark, is a cherished tradition within the Danish Royal Family. It traces its origins back to the reign of King Christian X in the early 1900s.
The Royal Yacht Dannebrog serves as both the official and private residence for King Frederik and Queen Mary during their summer cruises in Danish waters and on overseas official visits. Constructed between 1931 and 1932 at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen, the Dannebrog replaced the earlier royal vessel, the paddle steamer Dannebrog, which dates back to 1879. Typically, the yacht is docked at Holmen, on Copenhagen’s harbour, providing an opportunity for royal enthusiasts to view the vessel when it is not in use by the Royal Family. This location is conveniently situated a short walk from Amalienborg Palace, the King and Queen’s official residence.
The Dannebrog stands as one of the world’s only two remaining royal yachts. The other is the Norwegian Royal Yacht, Norge. In contrast, the British Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997.
Queen Margrethe II’s Health Update
Meanwhile, King Frederik’s mother, Queen Margrethe II, is currently recuperating at Fredensborg Palace, located north of Copenhagen. This follows a period of hospitalisation for treatment of a significant blood clot, which occurred less than two weeks after she suffered a heart attack. The 86-year-old monarch has been compelled to cancel a series of engagements, including her planned appearance at the inauguration of a new bridge named in her honour. Her grandson, Crown Prince Christian, will instead represent the Royal Family at the opening of the four-kilometre-long Queen Margrethe II’s Bridge on Saturday. Palace officials have indicated that the Queen’s future schedule will be continually assessed based on her ongoing health condition.
