Utah Man’s House: Data Center in Drought-Hit State

“My Home Identifies as a Data Centre”: Utah Resident’s Satirical Protest Against Water-Hungry Tech Projects

A wave of frustration over stringent drought restrictions in Utah has led one resident to a uniquely Australian-style satirical protest. Jordan Smith, a homeowner in Riverdale, has ingeniously declared that his house now “identifies as a data centre,” a bold statement aimed at highlighting what he perceives as a stark hypocrisy in the state’s approach to water management.

Smith’s campaign has inadvertently placed him at the forefront of a growing backlash against the proposed Stratos Project in Box Elder County. This ambitious, sprawling data centre development has ignited a fierce debate, pitting concerns over water scarcity and unsustainable growth against the allure of technological advancement and economic investment in Utah’s future.

At the heart of Smith’s protest lies a pointed critique of state leaders who are currently evaluating a massive artificial intelligence project. Critics of this initiative harbour significant anxieties about its potential to consume vast quantities of one of the Western United States’ most precious and dwindling resources: water.

While residents of Riverdale, like Smith himself, are under mandatory orders to curtail their water usage due to worsening drought conditions, Smith argues that ordinary citizens are being asked to make significant sacrifices. This comes at a time when lawmakers are simultaneously considering developments that would place immense demands on both water and power supplies.

Smith, a 36-year-old father of three, has taken his message directly to the streets – or rather, the lawns. He designed and distributed eye-catching, satirical yard signs that boldly proclaim: “This home identifies as a data centre and will use whatever amount of water it wants.”

These signs have quickly become a talking point, spreading rapidly through communities and across social media platforms. Their intention is clear: to draw attention to what Smith views as a glaring and unacceptable contradiction in Utah’s water conservation policies.

“The signs are really meant to spark conversation around what I see as a major public policy issue for Utah residents,” Smith, who works as a real estate agent, explained. “For years, everyday homeowners have been told to limit water usage, reduce consumption, and make sacrifices because of drought concerns and strain on infrastructure.”

“At the same time,” he continued, “there are proposals for extremely large scale data centre developments that could require enormous amounts of water and power.”

This criticism comes at a critical juncture for Riverdale City, located approximately 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. Officials there are currently grappling with what they describe as severe drought conditions. The city has implemented mandatory water-use restrictions, effective from April 27th through November 1st, after issuing a stark warning that conditions within the Weber River drainage system have deteriorated dramatically.

In detailing these restrictions, city officials painted a grim picture of the challenges facing local water supplies. They stated: “Spring run-off flows are already finished, and water conditions are looking extremely bleak. At this time, the reservoirs, which supply a significant amount of water used in Riverdale City during summer months, are at dangerously low levels of capacity.”

Against this backdrop of scarcity and stringent restrictions for residents, the prospect of a colossal data centre development has become a highly contentious issue.

The proposed Stratos Project has drawn intense scrutiny from environmental organisations and concerned members of the public alike. Their primary worry revolves around the sheer volume of water that could be required to support the project across its vast 40,000-acre footprint. Critics fear that the establishment of large-scale AI infrastructure will inevitably place additional pressure on already strained natural resources. Furthermore, they are concerned that it could complicate ongoing efforts to protect the Great Salt Lake, which has become a significant environmental concern in recent years due to its declining water levels.

Smith is quick to clarify that his campaign is not an indictment of technology itself. “My concern is not about technology itself,” he asserted. “It is about transparency, long-term planning, and whether residents fully understand the scale of these projects and their potential impact on local resources and communities.”

Instead, he believes the signs were deliberately crafted to employ humour as a tool, aiming to initiate a conversation that many Utahns might otherwise overlook or avoid. “The signs are intentionally satirical,” Smith explained. “Humour and perceived hypocrisy have a way of making people pause and pay attention when they otherwise might keep scrolling.”

The genesis of this idea, he revealed, stemmed from a place of personal frustration and a casual conversation with a friend. “Like many people, I often felt powerless to do anything meaningful about issues that concern me,” he shared. “During a conversation with a friend, he jokingly said, ‘You should just make a yard sign about how you feel.’ So I did.”

What began as a light-hearted, “tongue-in-cheek” concept rapidly evolved into something far more significant. “The response has honestly been far larger than I expected,” Smith admitted. He reports receiving messages from individuals across Utah and even from further afield, all expressing a shared sentiment. “People from all over have reached out because they feel there should be more public discussion before projects of this scale move forward.”

Smith feels his campaign has already achieved its core objective. “Whether people agree with me or disagree with me, the signs have accomplished what they were intended to do: get people talking.”

However, proponents of the Stratos Project maintain that many of the fears surrounding the AI development are unfounded.

Officials from the Military Installation Development Authority and Box Elder County have consistently stated that the project will not divert water away from residential use, agricultural needs, or the Great Salt Lake. Project backers assert that the facility will utilise a closed-loop cooling system and existing water rights tied to the property, rather than drawing from current water supplies used by residents. The Utah Department of Natural Resources has also indicated that it will oversee water usage associated with the project.

Despite these assurances, as drought conditions continue to worsen and communities face increasingly strict restrictions on everything from lawn watering to everyday household consumption, the debate over water allocation and the future of large-scale technological developments shows no signs of abating. The satirical yard signs of Riverdale are a stark reminder of the growing tension between the state’s resource limitations and its ambitions for the future.
