AI Giant Anthropic Eyes Public Debut, Valued at Staggering $965 Billion

Artificial intelligence powerhouse Anthropic is making significant moves towards a public listing, having submitted a confidential filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a proposed Initial Public Offering (IPO). This development signals a remarkable ascent for the company, which has rapidly transformed from its origins as a research laboratory into a dominant force in the AI landscape, now boasting an impressive valuation of $965 billion.

The filing, according to Anthropic, “gives us the option to go public after the SEC completes its review.” The company has stressed that the ultimate decision to proceed with an IPO “will depend on market conditions and other factors.” As of now, specifics regarding the number of shares to be offered or their pricing have not been determined.

This strategic move follows a substantial private funding round announced just last week, where Anthropic secured $65 billion. This infusion of capital propelled the five-year-old developer of the Claude chatbot to one of the most highly valued startups globally. The recent funding announcement has effectively placed Anthropic ahead of its primary competitor, OpenAI – the creators of ChatGPT – in terms of market valuation and reported revenue. Anthropic now reports an impressive $47 billion in annualized revenue, generated from licensing its advanced AI technology to users who leverage Claude for a variety of tasks, including sophisticated coding applications.

Founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI leaders, Anthropic joins a cohort of high-profile tech innovators, including OpenAI and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, that are widely anticipated to pursue public listings in the near future. However, a common thread among these ambitious ventures is their current operational status as money-losing entities, a situation that has fuelled ongoing concerns about a potential “AI bubble” within the market.

SpaceX Also Poised for Landmark Public Offering

Adding to the buzz surrounding major tech IPOs, Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX also announced its intentions to go public last month. This anticipated market debut is expected to be a landmark event, potentially becoming the first U.S. company to surpass a trillion-dollar valuation upon its listing.

Should SpaceX’s offering meet its ambitious targets, it would immediately establish the company as one of the most valuable publicly traded entities worldwide. This would mark the second instance within Elon Musk’s extensive business empire to achieve a market capitalization exceeding $1 trillion, following in the footsteps of other ventures.

While SpaceX initially garnered widespread recognition for its groundbreaking work in rocket manufacturing and satellite deployment, its substantial revenue stream of $18.67 billion last year was predominantly driven by its Starlink satellite internet service. A significant portion of its projected future growth is now intrinsically linked to its burgeoning artificial intelligence-related initiatives. Despite this, its nascent AI division, xAI, is presently operating at a loss, according to recent disclosures.

If the sale successfully achieves its envisioned valuation, SpaceX could command a record-breaking $1.75 trillion. Such a valuation would place its visionary founder on a trajectory to potentially become the world’s first trillionaire, a testament to his consistent challenging of conventional wisdom and his success in developing revolutionary technologies like reusable rockets.

The current landscape of major tech companies gearing up for public markets reflects a broader trend of innovation and rapid growth in sectors like artificial intelligence and space exploration. Investors are closely watching these developments, weighing the immense potential against the inherent risks associated with rapidly evolving and capital-intensive industries. The success of these upcoming IPOs could significantly shape the future of both the technology sector and the global financial markets.
