Major Water Main Burst Disrupts Sydney’s North Shore, Causing Property Damage and Harbour Contamination
A significant burst water main on Sydney’s North Shore has caused widespread disruption, leaving nearly 20,000 residents without water and leading to property damage. The incident, which occurred this morning on Grasmere Road in Cremorne, near Primrose Park, has also resulted in murky water seeping into Sydney Harbour.
Sydney Water crews are currently on-site undertaking urgent repairs to the ruptured main, which has significantly damaged the footpath and sections of Grasmere Road. The burst has impacted supply to a large swathe of the Lower North Shore, with residents in Cremorne, Neutral Bay, and Mosman reporting little to no water pressure.

The disruption isn’t limited to a lack of water; many affected residents have also noted that the tap water they are receiving is discoloured, appearing brown. This discolouration is a direct consequence of the burst pipe and the subsequent flooding in the vicinity.
Flooding and Harbour Impact
The scale of the water leak resulted in considerable flooding in the immediate area. Reports indicate that the flooding extended to the lower sections of Primrose Park and, concerningly, has seeped into Sydney Harbour. This influx of sediment-laden water into the harbour raises environmental concerns.
Sydney Water has confirmed that the incident has caused damage to several properties in the affected suburbs. The organisation stated it is working closely with residents whose homes have been impacted by the burst main and subsequent flooding.
Water Supply Restoration and Ongoing Repairs
Fortunately, Sydney Water has announced that it has successfully isolated the ruptured main and restored water pressure and supply to the nearly 19,200 properties initially affected.
A spokesperson for Sydney Water commented, “Crews have now isolated the main and restored pressure and supply to affected customers.” They also provided specific advice for residents in multi-unit dwellings: “If customers live in a unit block or similar with a private booster pump, their plumber may need to reset the system to restore supply to the building.”
While the immediate water supply has been restored, extensive repair work on the main is still underway. This necessitates ongoing road closures. Grasmere Road and Young Street remain partially closed to traffic as crews continue their efforts to fully repair the damaged infrastructure.
Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area to minimise further congestion and allow repair crews unimpeded access. Sydney Water has issued an apology for the inconvenience caused by the incident and expressed gratitude for the community’s patience as the necessary repairs are completed.
