Rahman Urges Vigilance at Polls to Safeguard Election Integrity
Dhaka, Bangladesh – BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has issued a fervent call to his party’s leaders, workers, and supporters, urging them to remain steadfast at polling stations until the final vote count on election day. The directive aims to preempt any attempts at electoral manipulation and ensure the sanctity of the democratic process.
“On the polling day, you must wake up for Tahajjud prayers,” Rahman instructed, emphasizing a disciplined and spiritual start to the day. “After Tahajjud, go to your polling stations and offer Fajr prayers together in congregations. Once the prayers are finished, stand in lines in front of the polling centres.” This meticulous sequence underscores the party’s emphasis on order and commitment.
Speaking at a vibrant election rally held at the Chouddagram School ground, the BNP chairman further elaborated on the critical role of party members at the grassroots level. He implored them not to depart from their designated polling stations once they have cast their ballots.
“Since you will be voting for the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’,” Rahman stated, referring to the party’s electoral symbol, “no conspiracy must be allowed. You must guard the polling stations and the ballot boxes until voting ends and counting is finished.” This resolute stance highlights the party’s determination to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the entire electoral process, from the casting of votes to the declaration of results. The crowd responded with an emphatic “Yes” when asked if they agreed, to which Rahman responded with “Alhamdulillah,” signifying his satisfaction with their commitment.
The rally itself was a testament to the widespread support for the BNP, drawing thousands of enthusiastic individuals from surrounding villages. The atmosphere was electric, with small processions converging on the venue from the early evening. By the time of the Maghrib prayers, the field was completely filled, showcasing the significant mobilization efforts of the party.
The Cumilla-11 (Chouddagram) constituency has emerged as a focal point of this election, particularly due to the notable nominations. The BNP has fielded Kamrul Huda, while the Jamaat-e-Islami, an ally, has put forward its Nayeb-e-Ameer, Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, creating a compelling electoral contest.
BNP’s Vision for Governance and Development
During his address, Tarique Rahman articulated the BNP’s comprehensive plans and policy proposals, asserting that the party is committed to implementing its agenda if given the mandate to govern. He directly addressed skepticism from some quarters, stating, “Some people over the last two or three days have been saying that we are trying to mislead the public with our promises.”
He challenged these assertions by appealing to the audience’s familiarity with the party and its candidates. “Don’t you know Kamrul (BNP candidate Kamrul Huda)? Don’t you know me?” Rahman asked, rhetorically questioning the motive behind any alleged deception. “Tell me, what benefit will we get by deceiving people? We will have to come to you again. We are in politics and we have to come to you. What will we gain by misleading people?” This appeal underscores the BNP’s purported commitment to accountability and its long-term engagement with the electorate.
Rahman highlighted the BNP’s extensive experience in national governance. “Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah, BNP has run the country multiple times. We have the experience,” he declared. “If there is the experience, then there is an understanding of how to adopt a policy and implement it in stages. In the present context, BNP is the only political party with such experiences.” This statement positions the BNP as a seasoned and capable political force, ready to tackle the nation’s challenges.
Focus on Agricultural and Religious Community Development
Describing Chauddagram as a vital ‘granary belt’ of the nation, Rahman outlined specific development initiatives his party intends to pursue. A key proposal includes the introduction of a “farmer card” designed to support marginal and small growers. This initiative aims to provide targeted assistance and resources to those who form the backbone of the country’s agricultural sector.
Furthermore, the BNP leader pledged to institute government honorariums for imams and muezzins serving mosques and madrasas. This commitment acknowledges the significant role of religious leaders in society and aims to provide them with financial security and recognition for their services. The party also plans to focus on creating additional employment opportunities, particularly for these community figures, thereby enhancing their livelihoods and contributing to local economic growth.
Rahman also made a personal commitment to the people of Chauddagram. He promised that if the BNP returns to power, he would personally visit the constituency to oversee the commencement of excavation work aimed at rebuilding the local canals. This pledge signifies a direct engagement with local infrastructure development and a commitment to improving the region’s water management systems.
During his speech, Tarique Rahman, visibly unwell with a cold and fever, wore a red cap and coughed repeatedly. He candidly addressed the audience about his condition, requesting their understanding. “So I cannot speak loudly. Please listen quietly and attentively to what I am saying,” he requested, ensuring that his message, despite his physical discomfort, was received with the seriousness it deserved.
Commitment to Law and Order and Anti-Corruption
Beyond electoral vigilance and community development, Rahman also conveyed the BNP’s firm resolve to uphold law and order and combat corruption should they be elected. This dual focus on safeguarding democracy at the polling booth and promising robust governance in the future forms a central pillar of the BNP’s electoral campaign. The party aims to present itself as a comprehensive solution provider, addressing both the immediate concerns of fair elections and the long-term aspirations for a stable, prosperous, and ethical nation.
