Bowlo Revival: Aussie Pubs Reclaim Their Crown

The beloved Australian ‘bowlo’ is experiencing a significant revival, drawing in a new generation of patrons thanks to a blend of cost-of-living pressures and a yearning for nostalgic experiences. Once facing an uncertain future, these local institutions are strategically adapting to appeal to a younger demographic, with some embracing modern renovations while others carefully preserve their cherished old-world charm.

The term ‘bowlo’, a colloquialism for bowling club, is deeply embedded in Australian vernacular. The very first of these establishments opened its doors in Sandy Bay, Tasmania, back in 1845. Initially conceived as venues for playing the sport of lawn bowls, they quickly evolved into vital social centres for burgeoning Australian communities. However, as societal tastes shifted and lawn bowls waned in popularity, many of these clubs found themselves in precarious financial situations.

Research conducted by the University of New South Wales in 2022 highlighted the dramatic decline, revealing that approximately half of Sydney’s bowling clubs had ceased operations over the preceding four decades. The number dwindled from 210 in 1980 to 128 in 2022, with the most substantial losses occurring in the ten years leading up to the latter year, during which 51 clubs closed their doors. As of 2022, Sydney was home to 128 bowling clubs, with 96 operating independently and 28 having merged with other entities. The remaining four were under private or government ownership.

Professor Robert Freestone, a co-author of the study, noted that the clubs that managed to survive had implemented significant operational changes. These included a relaxation of traditional rules to attract a broader range of social players, the introduction of popular activities like barefoot bowls, and a strategic rebranding to transcend their identity as solely bowling clubs, often embracing the broader ‘sports club’ designation.

Lead author Louis Heath observed that the “relaxed vibe and the affordable beer in an unpretentious setting” of a bowlo continues to resonate deeply with Australians. However, he emphasised that the clubs that are truly thriving have gone further by incorporating live music and entertainment, along with other initiatives designed to attract a more diverse clientele.

The inherent value of the land on which many bowlos are situated has also made them attractive targets for property developers. Some clubs have opted to sell off portions of their land, while others have entered into agreements to surrender their entire site in exchange for a newly constructed club facility, often complete with pristine bowling greens.

A Modern Makeover: The Willarong’s Transformation

A prime example of this adaptive strategy is the Caringbah Bowling & Recreation Club, located in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. Established in 1951 and last refurbished in 1970, the club underwent a substantial demolition and redevelopment project costing $70 million.

This ambitious mixed-use precinct now boasts over 240 residential apartments spread across three buildings, including a vital component of affordable housing. The revitalised ‘bowlo’ section, now known as The Willarong, officially opened its doors in October 2025.

The new facility features two state-of-the-art artificial bowling greens equipped with premium LED lighting for enhanced night bowling. Patrons can enjoy modern seating and shade structures, updated scoreboards, and a spacious bistro capable of seating approximately 400 people, both indoors and outdoors. The outdoor seating area offers picturesque views overlooking the bowling greens.

Furthermore, a dedicated section of the club is available for hosting functions, accommodating up to 120 guests. For families, an indoor children’s play area is provided, and the venue warmly welcomes dogs in its outdoor spaces.

Ian Kirk, the chief executive of The Willarong, joined the team a year prior to the club’s reopening. He shared with nine.com.au that the revitalised venue has been enthusiastically embraced by the entire community, with patronage growing “organically.”

Membership numbers have surged dramatically, increasing from around 500 (of which only about 80 were bowlers) before the redevelopment, to over 5,000 within just six months of reopening.

Kirk attributes the community’s strong reception to the club’s comprehensive offering, particularly its excellent dishes served at reasonable prices. This value proposition is proving more critical than ever in the current challenging economic climate.

“During tough times, people are naturally drawn to the club experience, as it offers more than just a meal or a drink; it provides great value for money,” Kirk explained. “Our visitors are enticed by the overall experience our new local provides – it’s casual, has great vibes, and serves fantastic food and drinks.”

He elaborated that the club, which adopted the broader ‘sports club’ terminology upon its relaunch, now caters to the entire community, “from the very young to the old.”

“It’s a community facility that is evenly split across all age groups and demographics,” he stated. “We aim to serve all age demographics and people from all walks of life. We like to say we are ‘a pub in a club skin’.”

Kirk also highlighted the menu’s blend of classic club fare with a Mediterranean twist. He proudly mentioned that their chicken schnitzel was recently recognised as the “second best in the Shire,” adding with a touch of humour that they are determined to claim the top spot next time.

A new winter menu is set to launch imminently, featuring popular items like their Sunday roast lunch or dinner, alongside other seasonal favourites. Additionally, affordable $16 lunch specials are available from Monday to Friday.

Acknowledging the current economic pressures, the club is introducing weeknight specials to further enhance value:

  • Mondays: Kids eat free.
  • Tuesdays: $15 pizza night.
  • Wednesdays: Curry night.

Patrons can also enjoy a $6 schooner of beer or a glass of wine during happy hour, which runs from 4 pm to 6 pm, Monday to Thursday. Members receive a 10% discount and access to exclusive deals.

The club actively contributes to the local community through various initiatives, including sponsoring the Caringbah Redbacks football club and collaborating with One Meal to provide sustenance for those in need on Mondays.

Six months into its revitalised operation, The Willarong continues to explore innovative ways to engage the community. Their popular “party bowls” – a fun, social take on barefoot bowls – can be booked on Fridays and weekends.

Major sporting events, particularly Cronulla Sharks and NRL games, draw significant crowds thanks to the club’s sports bar-style big screens. They are also planning to host watch parties for the FIFA World Cup.

Preserving Heritage: South Cronulla Bowling Club

While The Willarong epitomises modern redevelopment, approximately five kilometres away, South Cronulla Bowling Club stands as a testament to enduring charm and resilience. Having operated for 70 years, it has thrived without resorting to significant modern upgrades.

Established in 1956, the club has meticulously maintained its original retro aesthetic. Its success in attracting a broader clientele stems from its introduction of barefoot bowls, vibrant band nights, themed trivia nights (held on the third Thursday of each month), and monthly line dancing events. Every Friday is dedicated to a “Club Grub” night, featuring a different culinary theme.

To supplement its income, the venue is frequently hired out for weddings, engagement parties, and birthday celebrations.

The RSL Resurgence

The rejuvenation trend is not confined to ‘bowl-os’. Local RSL clubs, affectionately known as ‘rissoles’, are also undergoing significant transformations.

Club Rose Bay, situated in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, is one of the latest establishments to receive a substantial facelift.

Originally opened in 1947 and later becoming an RSL club four years thereafter, the venue recently underwent its first upgrade since 1979, under the direction of Merivale’s Justin Hemmes. He has masterfully transformed the club from a somewhat dated RSL into a chic, contemporary establishment. It now boasts an outdoor sports court where patrons can enjoy pickleball or a casual game of basketball.

Its reopening, just days before Christmas 2025, saw extensive queues of eager patrons lining up around the block. The new-look club features a stylish vinyl record bar serving expertly crafted cocktails and an upscale new restaurant, Notti’s. Notably, traditional RSL fare like schnitzels has been replaced with a more refined culinary offering.
