Queensland Reels Under Devastating Floods: Dramatic Rescues and Widespread Disruption
Queensland is currently grappling with severe flooding as a potent tropical low sweeps across the state, triggering widespread disruption, dramatic rescues, and posing significant threats to life and property. The deluge has inundated roads, swollen rivers, and forced emergency services into action across vast swathes of the Sunshine State.
Daring Rescue in Bargara Highlights Flood Dangers
One particularly harrowing incident unfolded in Bargara, near Bundaberg, where quick-thinking police officers rescued a schoolboy from the window of a car trapped in fast-moving floodwaters on a causeway. Dashcam footage captured the dramatic scene, showing two officers wading through thigh-deep water to reach the submerged vehicle. They can be seen carefully extracting the young boy and carrying him to safety. Queensland Police confirmed that two individuals were safely removed from the car around 7:40 AM. The 54-year-old male driver has since been issued a $667 fine for driving without due care and attention, a stark reminder of the perils of venturing into flooded areas.

Bureau of Meteorology Issues Severe Weather Warnings
The region is bearing the brunt of a tropical low that previously impacted north Queensland. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning, predicting that some areas could experience rainfall totals of up to 160mm every six hours. Overnight, significant rainfall was recorded, with Brovinia receiving 260mm, Emerald 190mm, and Gympie 184mm.
Dam Releases and River Levels Cause Concern
Water authorities are closely monitoring dam levels and releases. Sunwater has reported a “significant increase” in water spilling from Paradise Dam into the Burnett River, urging those downstream to stay vigilant and monitor changing conditions. Similarly, Boondooma Dam is also spilling into the Boyne River, adding to the rising water levels in the state’s river systems.
Major Road Closures Hamper Travel
The flooding has led to extensive road closures, severely impacting transport networks. The Bruce Highway, a crucial arterial road, is closed in both directions at Takilberan, near Gin Gin, due to inundation. Water is also reported to be over the highway at Two Mile, near Gympie. The list of affected roads is extensive, with the Burnett Highway blocked in multiple locations and numerous other roads closed across the Wide Bay and Burnett regions, as well as on the Sunshine Coast. Authorities are strongly advising motorists to check road conditions before travelling and to absolutely avoid driving through floodwaters, as multiple rescue operations are underway across the state.
Stranded Motorists and Swiftwater Rescues
The dangers of driving in flood-affected areas were underscored by another incident near Booubyjan, south of Booubyjan. A photo shared on social media depicted a person stranded atop their submerged car at Boonara Creek on the Murgon-Gayndah Road. This individual was first spotted around 6:50 AM and remained on the roof of their vehicle for four hours before being rescued by swiftwater rescue crews around 10:45 AM.

Tesla Adrift: A Dramatic Sunshine Coast Rescue
In a remarkable rescue on the Sunshine Coast, a woman was pulled from the roof of her Tesla just before midnight at Peachester. She had called emergency services after water rose to her car’s windows, causing the vehicle to float and drift into nearby trees.
Emergency Alerts Issued for High-Risk Areas
Residents in the vicinity of Policemans Creek at Rubyvale received an urgent emergency alert from the Central Highlands Regional Council this morning, warning of an immediate threat to life and property and urging them to move to higher ground and inform others. Emergency flood watch and act warnings were also issued overnight and this morning for the South Burnett region, as well as for Chinchilla, Jandowae, and Sapphire, advising residents to prepare for flash flooding and to refrain from driving.
South-East Queensland Braces for Further Rainfall
The south-east of the state is also anticipating significant rainfall, with 24-hour totals potentially reaching around 250mm in areas already saturated from previous wet weather.

Scenic Views Turn Treacherous: Landslides and Falling Trees
Footage from the Sunshine Coast shows water cascading off Mt Coolum, a testament to the intense rainfall. The saturated ground across Brisbane has also led to trees falling, causing further disruption and hazards.
Flood Warnings Across Multiple River Systems
The severe weather warning area stretches from Yeppoon and Rockhampton in the north, southwards through Emerald and Gladstone, encompassing Bundaberg and Gympie. The rain is expected to persist throughout today and tonight before gradually easing tomorrow as the weather system moves offshore.
Current flood warnings are in effect for a multitude of river systems, including:
- Burdekin downstream of Burdekin Falls Dam
- Don and Proserpine
- Pioneer
- Connors, Isaac and Styx
- Plane
- Baffle
- Kolan
- Burnett
- Burrum and Cherwell
- Mary
- Noosa
- Upper Brisbane
- Paroo
- Nicholson
- Upper Flinders
- Lower Flinders
- Norman
- Georgina and Eyre

The ongoing severe weather serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the critical importance of heeding official warnings and prioritising safety during extreme weather events.
